RIFLE THAT BOONE CARRIED
Cld-raahioned Flint Lc:!: Said to Hava
Eeen Brought to Wisconsin
Town by Southerner.
Daniel Boone’s rifle, a genuine old-
fashioned flint lock, carried by Boone
on many a perilous tbip in the dark
and bloody hunting ground of Ken
tucky and on ^1b famous Indian hum-..
.Jftf expeditions, was recenfly brought;-
into a hardware store in a small town
in southwestern Wisconsin for, imp.‘h
titled repairs, V is ,npw the ’
eAy ftf a Mr. Rafter, fomierly pf^Mis
sissippi, who recently traded his 2,300
acre plantation for Wisconsin property
ami has moved his effects north. The
rifle was given him' by a doctor, to
whom it had been given by un aged
hermit living in tne mountains of Ten
nessee.
The rifle Is a formidable affair, a
real “long rifle,” one of the type that
gave the nickname of the “long rifles”
to our western frontiersmen. It has
a barrel 40 inches long, is 45 caliber,
u flint lock with a putchbox of in
laid silver, and weighs ten pounds.
The end of tire butt is set with a wild
boar’s tusk, and has the double or set
trigger. On the side of the stock are
carved with a jackknife the words,
“Boon’s Tru Fren,” on the walnut
stock the Initials D. B. and live most
significant and s’nister notches, each
notch standing for “one good Injun.”
At the lower end of the stock is a long
and deeply cut gasli said to have been
cut by an Indian tomahawk thrown at
Boone. What happened to the Indian
is not recorded.
The rifle, badly broken in shipment,
has been repaired and is now on ex
hibition.—Exchange.

ENDLESS CHAIN NOT MYSTICAL
Doctor Fighting Influenza Explains
How Curative Serum Went From
Patient to Patient.
The prevalence of influenza and
pneumonia with their high death rate
makes it imperative to resort to heroic
methods of treatment rather than to
follow the accepted ones only. The
lack of serum or oilier specific remedy
for influenza, writes Dr. Charles It.
Humbert in the Medical Record, to
gether with the inability to obtain
nntipneuiuoeoccus serum forced me to
use convalescent seinm.
The Endless Chain.—It Is a well-
known fact that persons convalescing
from pneumonia have anti-bodies In
their blood streams. As soon as the
patients’ condition permits, therefore,
they are bled as much and as frequent
ly as possible.
Serum is prepared and treated, and
is placed In stock. When another pa
tient comes In with pneumonia, treat
ment is begun. When convalescence
sets in the above procedure is repeat
ed. It is a case of one gives serum to
h.vo, two gives serum to three and so
on, the procedure becoming endless.

Clemscn College, Feb. 21.—Mr.
Bradfort Knapp, Chief o' the Office
of Extension Work in the South, has
just issued a 16-page bulletin on
"Safe Farming in the Southern States
in 1919.” and an t ccpaipanying letter
, to farmers antf men. County
agents are suppled 1 tyifh the bulletrn
and these supplies should not lie uu
apkqd for or unread. Here are .some
bhm iik the letter.
% T% pre|«bit Situation in the most
dangerous which the.cotton states
have faced in years. W<; have had
four years of comparative prosperity,
partly because of short crops and
resultant good prices, and partly be
cau.-m we lltave produced so much of
our feud and feeds.* I ex,as and Okla
homa, both of whicai have had short
•otton crops for four years, have had
splendid winter rains and have pos
peels fo big cettou crips. Big crops
in Texas and Oklahoma have always
meant big crops in the whole country.
Think of tbty before increasing your
cotton acreage.
The mills of Northern France aitid
Belgium cannot he restored to work
ing capacity tor some time; and the
poor people' of Europe must buy fooel
before buying cotton clothing. Think
of that too.
The past; four years have seen
gradually increasing prices and cot
ton has just about kept pace with
other things. But ?ie farmer has
purchased spring and summer sup
plies and paid fo them with co ton
sold at the top price of the year to
settle debts made at lower prices.
We seem now to be facing the ne
eessity cf making a crop of cotton
with high-priced supplies and paying
the debts incurred ut of coton at
a lower price. This is sure to he
true if we produce a big crop and
'.hereby neip to lower the price of cot
ton. Think alse about that.
What about acreage. This years
1911, 1913, FUi were goodyears with
big crops and generally low prices.
Will, less acres :han last year and a
goed season we can make a very
large crop ••.•isily, with good produc-
in in Texas and Oklahoma. Would
vou rather produce more cotton and
take less Ir it after working a- larger
acreage at greate expense; or a small
er acreage, bet/er tended, with better
chance for good price, and oppotun-
itv to produce your food and feed
o'A remaining acreage? Think that
over.
There is a good way. Food plus
coltm equals prosperity. Plenty of
fcod for the people and feed for our
rapidly developing livestock industry
should be our first consideration in
safe farming in 1919. Safety first
hnnnds tXiat every -cotton tanner
sb ill cooperation in holding own the
cotton acreage.

FfiENCH SACRIFICE
FOR LIBERTY HEROIC
Censor's Office Boy.
It must he the censor’s office boy
who is responsible for some of the va
garies of the blue pencil. Not long ago
some patriotic soul quoted Kipling’s
lino from the “Recessional,” “The cap-
luliis and the kings depart.” He had
the surprise of Ills life when the word
“kings” was struck out. But worse
is now reported. Another scribe,
greatly daring in the meatless days,
quoted Thomas Hood’s joke in an ar
ticle on “Wayside Graves,” or some
thing equally solemn:
“So they buried Ben at four cross
roads
With a stake In his inside.”
That was too much for the censor’s
office boy. A stake In ^Is inside, in
deed. The censor’s office hoy knew if
he know how to spell that the food
controller would never sanction a
whole “steak”—a nice, succulent, juicy
steak, in anybody’s inside. So he de
leted the offending lines. Who shall
say that we are not ardently patri
otic people?—London News.

Slow Sartorial Reconstruction.
The question of civilian equipment
has its humorous ns well ns its seri
ous aspects for the honorobly dis
charged soldier or sailor. Some are
lucky enough to return immediately
and completely to “cits,” while others,
less fortunate, must content them
selves with a sort of half and half
adornment. It no longer causes
astonishment to detect a pair of neat
ly creased trousers hanging stiffly be
neath military khaki overcoat, or to
see the short blue jacket of the sailor
covering an otherwise perfect civilian
outfit. These are some of the minor
problems of reconstruction.—New
York Sun.
