Yet tim number who will yet turn

their way out. ' ft would be natural
if some prisoners, set free while in
an HI fed condition, should fall^sick

who long ago ired of the war, would
lot let these fellows go uncared~^pr.
It would not be strange if some

December 2fftb, 1918
Deer Aunt Bertha: •
Your interesting and much apprcci
a ted letter of Nov. 13 th received a
few weeks ago, and I am ashamed of
myself for not answering it right
away, but in a wav it -was not my
fault, because the clay after your let
ter came, we left on our long hike
from Franco into Luxemburg. The
train left Ambly. France, Dec. 7th..
and passed thru the following cities
en route: OUey. Spincourt, Longuyon
and Longuy all in France, and also
Esch and Alzingen in Luxembourg.!
At present we are billeted in Rollin
een, Luxembourg, we were at least
three weeks on the hike. The cities
bf France thafwe passed thru were
oertainly left in a had eondtion by the
Germans after their retreat thru tho
country.
Well Aunt Bertha we had a fairly
good dinner yesterday, considering
the conditions in this country. We
iiappened by chance to get three
»;eese, four chickens, also some eggs
and milk, which cost us dearly, but
we didn’t mind that anything to get
something besides army rations all
I'l.ij time. Now I don’t want you to i
think that we don’t get plenty of eats,'
but you know how it Is, a fellow gets
tired of one thing over and over each
day. Well this is one Xmas that I
have done without turkey, but I don’t
chink it hurt me, because a fellow can
afford to make a sacrifice once in his
life for his country, and I know that
I haven’t made as great a sacrifice tia
some of the boys have, the ones that
gave their lives for country
amde the greatest sacrifice.
Well I hope you and Uncle Fred
had a fine Xmas this year, but* I
tucss you did. Well I guess I ' will
have to close this time, give Uncle
t^red and tho ones at home my love.
Wishing you a happy and Presperous

nephew.

THE LET-DOWN AFTER THE WAR
When the strain of the war period
ended, many people developed a case
' of that tired feeling. They were sict
of wheatless days and meatless meals
They luted this continual prodding
’ to exercise thrift, give money, save
food, buy. bonds. Many of them see
no reason why they should not live
just as they did before the war.
Yet the sacrifices that have been
made will be futile if they have noi
taught some.hing. While this was
was not the fault of the American
people, it developed as the result
certain wtirld ^wide tendencies in
which every people had some share.
If wars are to be avoided in future
everyone giust.i take some share
building a new civilization on a firm
er basis.
There age certain lessons that
every sensible person should have
learned fnojn this experience. A few

HOW TO JUDGE A DIAMOND
Brilliancy. By all odds, brilliancy is the first requisite to dia
mond values. By brilliancy, we mean tho refraction of light that
produces color flashes in all the lines of the rainbow. Such a
diamond in trade circles Is called a “busy” diamond, for it is In
constant action when exposed to light—natural or artificial. It Is
brilliancy that makes one diamond worth a great deal more than
another of the same weight. Brilliancy is something that can
not be judged except by sight, and for this reason diamonds
should not be bought by mail, hut only from a reputable local
dealer who can be depended upon to help you make a proper selec
lion. Fine brilliancy depends very largely upon the shape and
cutting.

FROM PAMPLICO yesterday
to buy ne welothes for their new duties.
“We walked, just to keep in trim” they told

your advertisements in the papers the
folks sent down to Camp.
Now Stop and Think: These young men
walked 16 miles to see the H. S. & M. cloth

away. Pretty far reaching advertising,
we would say that will plant the seed of
desire, and carry it from Georgia to South
