the crocodiles took no notice. The
onlookers thought they seemed to give

Nearer and nearer they came, until
some of them were barely six feet

HISTORY OF THE BAKING INDUSTRY
\
The history of bread making is a history of the world since
the beginning of man. Adam s fate after his expulsios from
Paradise was: “In the sweat of thy brow shall thou eat bread.”
Bread baking is one of the oldest of human arts. It is older than
history and older than civilization. It is a romantic story of man
himself, his evolution and development through untold centuries.
Pre-historic relics tell us how bread was first milled by stone
crushers and baked on stone slabs durisg the Stone Age. the oldest
age of human civilization. The tombs of the ancient Egyptian.
Kings disclose how the Egyptians at the dawn of history milled by
the pestle and mortar and saddle stone, and baked on ashes and
cinders. Much has been written about the Royal ( Bakery of
harnesses III and the highly curious ovens and cooking utensils
of the Egyptian Kings. The frequent referesce in the Bible to
leavened bread indicates the use of leaven in the early Egyptian
period—the leaven however, was not yeast, but a sour dough
taken from a previous baking.

An amusing story was told to me
the other day concerning Lady Sybil

It appears that her ladyship, who la

for their entertainment. t
At the close of the meal one of the,
guests, not In the least realising who
she was, shyly offered her a Up, which
was politely declined. j
