Obituaries, cards of thanks and no tices of all kinds purely personal in their nature or in the nature of adver tisements, such as church fairs and anything of a money making nature are invariably charged for. Wednesday, March 3 1909. The business men of Florence would find that a cotton compress here would do more than any one thing to help the business of the city. It would not be a risky business venture, either. When time s are dull is the very best time to take new enterprises. The presidential bath tub is not the only thing to be enlarged for Taft. Everything from the salary down will have to be made greater for the big man that is to be our president after to-day. It is plainly up to the people of Florence to support the band if they want a band here. How would it strike you to have the band give free concerts once a month and pay con certs once a week? Would you patron ize the pay concerts? The Southern Tobacco Journal says “We recently wrote a polite letter to ft number of our friends who had not paid their subscriptions^ The few replies we received caused us to think perhaps our letters did not reach our friends. Something is wrong some where.” We have done the same thing, mak ing our letters as short and pointed as possible and have heard mighty little from them. Evidently there is some thing badly wrong with the mails. After having faced the managerie in Washington we do not apprehend any danger to Teddy Roosevelt from the animals in the African jungles. The new management of the Colum bia Record is now fairly launched, and gives every evidence of vigor and ability. Columbia ought to have an afternoon paper of influence in the state, and we confidently expect it in the Record under the management of Mr. Hoyt. He enjoys the confidence of the men of affairs in the state, and he has proved his ability in journal ism. We expect great things from the Record in the future. If we gave you an article favorable to the anti-prohibitionists yesterday we gave you one also that was quite in accord with the views of the cold water army in the third column of the paper. It is a stand off. We are sincere when we say that we do not intend to use the paper and its in fluence against the proposition. Those who are interested on either side shall have a fair field and no favors. If there were two papers here might take up the the matter, but as there is but one, we will have to make sac rifices to be fair to those who do not entertain the same views as ourselves. So far we have had no takers on our offe r to give to both sides the space necesary for putting forward their ar guments. If only one applies it will be the more unfortunate for the side that does not take advantage of the offer. Now let us remind you at the outset that you need not be on the look out for us to be unfair. We do not have to make this proposition, and have not a thing to gain by it not “toting fair.” Good Cough Medicine for Children.
