The current issue of the Scotland Neck, N. C. Herald gives the following account of a reception tendered in honor of a popular young lady of Flor ence. “Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Bowers were at home Tuesday night, February 23rd in honor of Mrs. Bowers’ sister. Miss Nelson of Florence, S. C. “At eight o’clock the guests began to arrive, and were received at the door by Mrs. J. E. Bowers, assisted by Miss Pattie Leggett, who conduct ed them to the punch bowl whicn was presided over by Misses Anna Ritch- ina and Lena Leggett. “The guests had free access to the parlors and Halls, which were artis tically decorated with ferns, smilax and palms. “Progressive wbist being the amuse ment of the evening, twelve tables had been arranged, with a bon-bon dish of after dinner mints on each table. At eight thirty the guests had arrived and each table was complete, and progressive whist was played un til eleven- thirty. Dr. J. E. Shields was the winner of the gentleman’s prize, which was a box of fine cigars. The ladies’ prize was a Christy picture, and was won by Miss Eleanor Smith. Mrs. Charlie Herring won the booby prize which was a small hatchet, Miss Nelson, in whose honor the at home w T as given, received a handsome gold bar pin. “At eleven thirty refreshments were served by Miss Lucile and Verna Leg gett and Irene and Gertrude White- head, consisting of Richmond cream and cake and was tastefully decorated with violets. “Every minute of the evening was keenly enjoyed by the guests, and they all were one in the expression of the delightful time they had spent and in declaring that more hospitable host and hostess than Mr. and Mrs. J. He will be sworn in on the 4tfi and will then return to Flor ence for the ten days before the con- cention of the extra session of Con gress. A constable and an alleged bilnd ti ger got into a fierce fight on the street of Spartanburg yesterday. Neither was seriously hurt. Roosevelt yesterday gave a luncheon to those with whom he had been clos est during his administration. The engineers are arranging to put Jeffernson Davis’ name back on Cab in John Bridge, according to a recent order of Congress. Taft says he feels fine and is ready for theinauguration. Three members of the Pittsburg city council were convicted yesterday of conspiracy to defraud the city. An unusual thing happened yester day in the Carmack case. The defense bought a witness from the prosecution W. A. Whiteey, the advance agent of James Adams railroad shows which wintered here last year, and is well remembered, is now in Florence ar ranging for the appearance of his at traction next week. Treasurer Haynie Takes Office. County Treasurer C. T. Haynie took charge of the office this morning suc ceeding C. S. Lucas, who has been treasurer eight years. Mr. Lucas will take up his new work as cashier ofthe Farmers and Mechanics Bank tomor row. A Religious Author’s Statement Rev. Joseph H. Fesperman, Salis bury, N. C., who is the author of sev eral books writes: “For several years I was afflicted with kidney trouble and last winter I was suddenly stricken with a severe pain in my kidneys and was confined to bed eight days unable to get up without assistance. FREE BAND CONCERT. Delightful Musical Entertainment at the AuMitrium Tuesday Night. A free concert will be given to-mor row night at the Auditorium by the Florence band, to which the people of Florence are cordially invited to attend. A special program will be rendered and the music promises to be a treat to all. There will also be violin and violincello solos and some vocal numbers. The entertainment is given by the band absolutely free, so that the people of the city can have an opportunity to near the music which the band makes. It Is hoped that there will be a good attendance at the concert. All are asked to be seated by 8:30. Beware of Frequent Colds. The Registration Books are now open at mv office for the registration of all qu&.kaed voi^r.s in the City of Florence for the next municipal elec tion to be held on Thursday the 6th day of May next. The books will continue open for registration until April 30th next. Qualification: Every applicant must produce his County Registration Certificate and evidence that his taxes are paid. Then the oath that he has resided in the State two years in the couty one year and in the city in ward where he ex pects to vote four months and that he has never been convicted etc. C. D. The test case are now up before the recorder. Under the new statute mortgages and papers must be recorded within ten days after they are given. Governor Ansel is now busy sign ing acts. He reads everyone carefully j before signing it. Clarendon citizens have signed a pe tition for a special term of court to try William Bethune who recently kill ed G. B. Mims. The Appalachian forest reserve bill was passed by the house yesterday. The militia companies from this state to attend the inauguration will leave on a special train to-day for Washington. Mischievous boys have gotten in the habit of cutting the rural telephone wires aroun Aiken. Mrs. M. D. Harlee and children have gone to Washington to spend a while. Hon. A. C. U. Lake Drug Co. THE TOBACCO CROP. Reports Indicate That Much Golden Weed Will Be Planted Arourid Flor ence. Judge B. J. Hyman, of Hyman- ville, was in the city yesterday. The judge says the farmers in his section are preparing to plant a lot of tobacco this year and are now busy building barns and getting ready for handling the crop. The indi cations are that there will be an in crease in the acreage of tobacco all over this section. Prices were excep- given a stimulus to the planting of the tionally good last year and that has given a stimulis to the planting of the golden weed. The Florence ware housemen are expecting a big crop and they will do their part toward bringing it to Florence when the sell ing season comes on.
