His resignation as the term of the president who “stood so nobly by the race" was expiring is rather pitiful than anything else. He would “relieve Mr. Taft of embarrass ment.” He might have had the same consideration for the patient and long suffering people of the community in which he lived. He might have done something to reflect credit on himself and his race if he had resigned when appointed, but he did not do that, and he and his race have to paj^ for his pride and vain glory. The same sit uation prevails in the case of the lo cal pqstofflce. The incumbent, might have made firm and abiding friends with the white people whom he knows are generous, and he might have aided his race, w-hich he knows is*ungrateful by accepting the situation and solving I all of the difficulties of the situation in selecting and having appointed the white man best qualified for the place, for he had the opportunity. That? sort of persistence on the part of the ne groes who accidentally, as the foot ball of politicians, get into office, will be responsible for the passage of such bills as are now before the general as sembly of South. Carolina, and in oth er states,, designed to deprive the ne groes of practically all of the school fund, and to take away all the rights and liberties that are possible. If these beneficiaries of accident wish to injure their race in every way possible let them cling to .the delusive honors of office holding. Frr-—r ■- r*’" The meeeting of the Rural School Improvement Society was held on Saturday as advertised,' but instead of the large attendance that was ex pected of ladies of the city, ready anjl willing to help hi the work of the or ganization, there was not a soul pres ent except the teachers of the county and the superintendent of education, not even the teachers of the city were there to give encouragement to the work. The vistlng teachers were disappointed They have been holding their monthly meeting here year after year, quite a number of ladles and gentlemen engaged in the great work of education, and they have never had any attention shown them by the citizens of Florence, no appreciation of their presence here and no help ing hani in their work. They have therefore determined that they will not meet in Florence any more; but will hold meetings at various points in the county, and if the people of Florence do not jchose to wake from their indifference to the work, they will see what effect they can have on rousing the people of the rural dis tricts and of the other towns in the county. * * * r r The loss of the ' teachers meetings to Florence will be a material one, as well In the matter of sentiment and pleasure that might have been derived from their presence here. Last Sat urday Mr. Gasque paid out to white teachers over three thousand dollars in salaries. The greater part Of this money was spent in Florence that day When they have it sent in checks they spend it, generally in mail orders to the north and west. That is after the payment of their board bills. Flor ence will lose materially hi that re spect This is not the first time that The Times has called the attention of the business people to this matter, and urged them for this reason, as well as fdr others, to show the interest that we knew that they felt in the 'organization' of the teachers. We might appeal to you on a thousand different grounds to show your inter est in the very respectabe body of earnest and effective Workers, of peo ple who are in a position to do Flor ence as much good as any other body that we know of, but we know that the appeal to your interest in the town will be one that will impress itself most readily. Judging from the number of news papers and job offices that are being offered for sale through the country the’ past year has not been a hay ma king season for the printers. One trade paper has 28 newspapers ad vertised on easy terms. The Tennessee senators who oppose legislation by breaking a quorum and have to fly the state to escape arrest ought to take a few lessons from the “immortal ten” of the South Carolina legislature, it is easier to filibuster than to flee, and it’s cheaper too. Of course the recent legislature did not do all that you wanted, and may be did much that you did not want, but really it did do a great deal in the way of remedial and general leg islation that will be felt in the state. Some of the new laws will be publish ed as they are issued in the advance sheets of the acts. A good deal of really good work was done. W. D. Crum, the negro collector of the port of Charleston has resigned, and in that resignation has made a Fresh country eggs, 20c per dozen.
