Ford, a prominent business man of Jacksonville killed himself yesterday. , The plant of the St. George Cotton Oil Company was totally destroyed by fire yesterday. The home of the late Joel Chandler will be purchased by his friends and make a memorial to him, the original Uncle Remus. Wireless telegraphy experiments were made yesterday by the Lake Shore road on a train moving sixty mies, an hour. It was a great success and the company will probably run all of its trains by^wireless later. People from all over the country are flocking to Washington for the Inauguration. OR. ELiOT IN COLUMBIA. Preparations for the reception ^y the University of President Eliot of Harvard are being made and in a few days the program will be announsced. Pres Eliot is now in the West and af ter a toru of the lower South will reach Columbia March 19th. By reso lution of the House the Hall of Rep resentatives has been secured for the occasion. An invitation will be sent to the faculties of all other colleges of the State as well as to the principal and Superintendents of the High Schools and it is hoped to have a rep resentative gathering of South Caro lina educators to hear Dr. Eliot whose long and distinguished career as a president of Harvard enables hime to speak with authority on educational topics. Te Annual meeting of the Alumni of the university is called for the same time. Dr. Mitchell will be present to assist in the entertainment of Dr. El iot and to meet the Alumni. Dr. Mit chell has recently delivered address es In Chicago and Boston before im portant gatherings where he made a most favorable impression. He is re garded as one of the foremost educa tors of the day and the University Is to be congratulated on securing his services. President Eliot is accompanied by Mrs. Eiot. A part of the Kershaw Oil Mill was burned yesterday entailing a loss of $25,000. Mrs. Elizabeth Woodruff, aged nine ty-six years died yesterday at her home near Spartanburg. Norman Gregory a negro boy has been arrested In Spartanburg charged vith attempted Criminal assault upon a girl at Gaffney. , A man and woman were arrested jesterday at Spartanburg who ploped flrom a place in Georgia. The woman is said to be the wife of a preacher. John Y. Garlington, former presi dent of the Seminole Company has been arrested in Chattanooga. He ▼ill notf resist extradition. A new national bank has been organ feed at Rock Hill with a capital of $100,000. New Lumber Mill. William Godfrey of Cheraw Erects Plants Near Ualmetto. William Godfrey and Co., lumber mill people, who have a large plant at Cheraw, have purchased the McCall Timber near Palmetto and are putting ip a mill two miles North of the sta tion. There is about four hundred acres of the finest long straw timber in the state on the old McCall place and It is recarded as an exceptionally good saw mill opening. A tram road has been built from Palmetto to the mill. MUNICIPAL REGISTRATION. The Registration Books are now open at my office for the registration of all qualified voters in the City of Florence for the next municipal elec tion to be held on Thursday the 6th day of May next. Thk books will continue open for registration until April 30th next. Qualification: Every applicant must^ produce his County Registration Certificate and evidence that his taxes are paid. Then the oath that he has resided in the State two years in the couty one year and in the city in ward where he ex pects to vote four months and that he has never been convicted etc. C. D.
