He Is discounted as a laborer! and has small chance in politics. The passage of that bill would amount in Florence county/ alone to more than the whole cost of the session of the legislature. , So your objection falls flat in that respect. The local option men have the argument that the coun ties of the state already have every means to vote liquor out if they wish it at any time, so that it is not neces sary to pass that bill to give any one their rights of self government. They contend that self government is a fight worth fighting for, and that even ex treme means are justifiable when Cher ished rights are sought to be taken from them, as Is the cdse in this fight for prohibition. They further contend that In the beginning of the campaign the referendum was all that was ask ed by the agitators and that they were prepared to meet that issue, but that after the election the proposition was changed unjustifiably. They further contend that the fight for prohibition is being made by a number of politi cians who have figured more or less prominently as offices seekers and who have no means of attracting to them selves votes except through an advo cacy of what they consider a popular measure, that the referendum bil' would cut the one plank of their hope from under the feet of these office seekers, and that those politicians and office seekers have no right to make the state pay for their political thunder That they did not bring the fight on and are standing for economy in gov ernment, the rights of the people to self government, the protection of the financial interests of the counties they represent and the interests of the state as against the interests of the politicians. Whether the filibuster is right or wrong, it seems to us that the filibusterers have some argument on their side. Coker is Inviting the earnest men of the Pee Dee section to re-awaken their Interest In the preservation of our history. The Times is ready, as it always has been, for anything that will tend to this purpose, and will cor dially cooperate with Maj. Coker in the effort to reorganize the historical society. That organization has done some good and there is a world of good yet to be accomplished by it. We would like very much to hear from others who will aid in this work. We are ready to do so as we have done before, give all historical bulletins free if we can get the matter to put in them. We want men and women who will contribute something to the ex pense of their distribution. Ls the filibuster against prohibition justifiable? That is the great question in South Carolina just now. The Times is constitutionally opposed and has al ways been to that sort of way of fight ing, hut before you condemn the fili busterers for tlu ir tactics on the grounds of the cost to the state, it would bo well to consider the econopiy as represented by the filibusterers. The proposed prohibition bill provides for prohibition to go into effect July t of this year. The counties which have dispensaries have estimated their levy and expenses on dispensary prof its, the schools have their special lev ies based on the same calculations.
