The pastors were at their posts of duly, save at the Presbyterian church where Dr. Samuel M. Smith of Columbia, filled the pul pit. Dr. Smith’s sermon was like that expected from him—clear, strong, logical, powerful and earn- osilv delivered. At night a union service was hold at this church. It was a pe culiarly interesting service. The people turned out 'iu full force, filling the church proper to the last seat and overflowing into the gallery. Dr. Smith preached again a thoughtful and peculiarly impressive sermon, using as the basis of his remarks theAarable of the rich man and Lazarak He made clear the lesson of th^^ra- ble, that is, that man is given by divinity the power to choose be tween the things of this world and the things of the world to come, and sfikingly showed the result of the choice in either case. His illustrations were apt and clear, his manner was forceful and earn est, and at times a breathless still ness filled the house. At the conclusion of Dr. Smith’s sermon the Rev. Walter I. Her bert arose and stated that Dr. Moseley, pastor of the Baptist church, would soak a few min utes. Dr. Moseley delivered a cor dial Christian greeting to the Rev Melton Clark, the newest comer among the ministers of Florence In behalf of the town, the coogM gatious And th*f pastors thereof be welcomed M r. Clark, and one could feel the unspoken yet nevertheless sincere response from the listening crowd. Mr. Clark briefly and happily responded, and the service was at an end. Mr. Penny who owns a farm about a mile from the station got off the ci r at the same time with a bundle of papers in his arm. Sept iS Miss Winnie Davis, daughter of Mrs. Jefferson Davis, ditd at noon ' to-day at the Rockingham hotel, I to which place she came as a guest in the early part of tin' Pier’s so- 1 nil season. She had been ill lor I several weeks and a fortnight ago her ailment was diagnosed as ma larial gastritis. At times her con dition became very serious, so that consultations of physicians were deemed necessary, but frequent rallies gave renewed hope that she would ultimately recover. During the past week eipe* ially was her condition considered favorable and it was thought that her removal from the hotel would he possible in a few days, as the hotel had closed for the season, leaving the patient and attendants practically alone in the house. Last night, however, a relapse in Miss Davis’ condition was no ticed, and throughout the night she lost strength perceptibly. This morning the physician said that the end was not far oh, ami at noon death came to end the suf fering, which at times had been in tense. Mrs. Davis had watched unremittingly at her daughter’s bedside and she is now bowed with sorrow. Mrs. Davis is holding up with great calmness in her affliction, and no fears are at present entertained of her health yielding to the strain pursued. Steiumetz, in a study of the cus-om printed in the Register Sociologia Italiana for January of this year, points out that when the meaning and origin of the us age are appreciated, it is by no means so foolish as it looks. Should the creditor die from hun ger, the debtor is held responsible for murder, and the terrible pen alties of blood revenge will be wreaked upon him by the family of the creditor. Not only the debtor himself, but all his kin or gens will become the targets of a merciless vendetta.
