Under the head «f “Election
Signs,” the Morning News says,
that in Maine and Vermont in
the late elections, the Democrats
made a much better showing than
the Republicans—that is that they
made gains in Republican strong
holds and are in much better spir
it.
Wo can say arnen to these words
of the Atlanta Journal:
“One etTect of our territorial
extension, and probably the host
one, will lie to break the backbone
of the unworthy idea which has so
long been dominant in our legis-
tion that wo cannot compete with
•ome other nations in the world’s
markets- Our “infant” industries
will soon have to hustle for them
selves. They have been protected
so loug and so highly that those of
, them that cannot now stand and
fight for themselves are not worth
preserving. Let down the bars.”

The county election is also
practically settled. Without giv

VACCINATION.
It is rather curious just now,
.at when vaocinatiqfh is regarded
)f such importance by our health
luthoriticH hero as to call for en
forcement by ordinance, the result
of a debate in the English House
of comm ms was a decided victory
for those wh do not believe in
it.
The tn lin question was compul

adopted wa- that: “No child

It was urg d hv some that “vac

it prevented.”
How can there be such differ-
euces of opinion on the subject?

P. K. Butler, ol pack-train No.
writing from Santiago, de Cuba,
on July 23d, says: “We all had
diarrhoea in more or less violent
lorm, and when we landed we had
no time to see a doctor, for it was
a case of rush and rush night and
day to keep the troops supplied
with ammunition and rations, but
thanks to Chamberlain's Colic

we were able to keep at work and
keep our health ; in fact, I sincere

this medicine was the indirect
saviour of our army, for if the
packers had been unable to work
there would have been no way of
getting supplies to the front. There
were no roads that a wagon train
could use My comrade and my
self had the good fortune to lay in
a supply ol this medicine for our

and I know in four cases it abso
