Judge Cannon and Asa Janu s,
convicted of riot, were sentenced
by the court a day or two ago.
Judge Cannon received h sentence
of 18 months iu the penitentiary,
and James’ sentence is six months.
A special train passed through
Florence last night carrying 200
stevedores to Tampa.
It is rumored that S,000 soldiers
will pass through Florence some
time next week.
To-day is the Jewish New Year,
and it is being appropriately ob
served. Yom Kippur, or the day
of atonement is only ten days off.
To-morrow night, as announced,
a service of greeting will be held
at the Presbyterian church. The
pastors of our churches will wel
come to Florence the Rev. Melton
Clark, who only a short time ago
began his work as pastor of the
church in which the services are
to be held. Dr. Samuel M. Smith
of Columbia will preach.
The first week of the session has
cuded and teachers and pupils at
fha city graded schoolsare settling
down .0 work. A smooth begin
ning ..as made, and.a year of hard,
successful work is expected.

“A correspondent writing to the
News and Courier some time ago
from Florence, S. the centre
of the tobacco section of the State,
said:
Capt. Paul Whipple formerly
planted 55(1 acres ot cotton. For
several years past he has not
planted a single acre of cotton,
being fully satisfied with tobacco at
a net prpfit of $100 per acre.
A prominent and well known
farmer of Florence county told me
yesterday that tobacco was the
“finest crop in the world for a
good tanner, and special accent
may be put on the adjective
“good.” He added that he be
lieved that he would make 5,000
pounds of tobacco on two acres
thin season, and that the indica
tions were that he would make 1,-
800 pounds per acre on 10 acres.

told me that his “plants” were
seven feet high and were tapped
at 36 leaves per Stalk.’’ Ten to
12 leaves were formerly considered

Yesterday morning a wonld-be
highway robber was neatly cap-
tun d and placed in the toils.
Mr. J. A. Moore of Williamsburg
county was counting some money
in the lot at Mr. J. F. Stackley’s
store, when a negro walked up and
asked the time of day. As
Mr. Moore reached for his watch
tiie seeker after information snatch-
ed a $5 hill and dashed away. He
was pursued immediately, the
blood hounds being called into
service. Some one said be had
gone into an old barn on the edge
of town, and sure enough there be
was found, money and all, and
captured. File negro gave bis
name as Tom Collins. He was
taken before magistrate Smith and
committed to jail, to await trial at
the next term of court.

the soldier vote. After reading
affidavits, etc., for an hour the
committee finally decided to post
pone the entire bearing until next
Friday at 6 o’clock, and in the
meanwhile resolved that the Sum
ter and Berkeley committees meet
on Tuesday, or Wednesday at least
in time to report its action by next
Friday at 5 o’clock. The counsel
were allowed to bring the Darling
ton matters into the contest.” ^

The firemen of Columbia were
delighted with their recent visit to
Florence. The Columbia Register
of the 7th gives some expressions
of opinion fiom them. They speak
of the splendid welcome given
them, of the plcaantness and fair
ness of the reel contests, and speak
a good word for all those who bad
anything to do with the firemen’s
tournament.
It is with pleasure thi» record is
made. Florence was glad to have
the Columbia fireman come, and
hopes their last visit has not been
made.
