By 10:30 unlock throngs of peo pie had gathered at the intersec tion of Dargan and Evans streets, all eager and impatient for the races to be called. The ropes were stretched, and promptly at 10:30 o’clock the Hope Juniors took their positions, one hundred .. yards from the hydrant* At the ■ 1 report of the pistol they were off, making the run to the plug in 15 seconds* Connection being slow watrr was obtained in 28 4-5 seconds. The next team on the program was the Hope. The boys ran beautifully, making the run to the plug in 14 seconds, but owing to some little accidents, nature of which was not assertained, 30 long seconds passed before water shot from the nozzle. The Palmetto boys of Colnmbia were next to run and proved them selves fairly # and squarely to bo the champions. They made the run and obtained wate* in 25 2-5 seconds, without the slightest hitch. Time to the plug 14 sec onds. Then came the Columbia No. 3. This team made the swit’est run of all, getting to the plug in 13 seconds. Failing entirely to make connection however, their full time was not recorded. Thisended the champions contest and the winning team was declared to be the Palmetto No. 2 of Columbia. The Young Americans won the town championship, time 29 sec onds. The “kids” made the run and obtained water in about 31 sec onds The prizes awarded were as fol lows : 1st prize, $75; Palmetto No. 2. 2nd prize, $50, Hope Jr. 3rd Hze $25, Hope Sr. Young mericans $5, and Kids $2.
