the Lo« Angeles Daily Times with
one of its leading articles, “A
Grand Industry” marked. The
Times gives facts and figures from
an expert showing that the beet
sugar industry can be so develop
od in our country as to supply the
amount of sugar now imported,
thus enabling us to keep the large
amount of money paid for the
same, at home.
We would, but for want of
space, publish the whole article.
It is peculiar.y suggestive at this
particular time, when it seems,
farmers and merchants and every
body else, depressed by ihe out
look for cotton, would at least be
willing to look into the practica*
bility of any farming industry
that might give relief. It really
looks now as if the experiences of
this year will demonstrate beyond
question thatT cotton planted ad-
libitum cannot be depended on
for a money crop.

commend a diversity of crops.
And if we had as our staple pro
ducts, tobacco, hay and grain,
beets and a little cotton, we would
always have something to catch
the market at high tide. Of
course ye do not know the cost of
cultivating sugar beets, their aver-

about the market, but if we mis
take not the signs of the times,
Northern capital is becoming less
timid toward the South, and if
beet culture could be made profita
ble here, the factories and refiner
ies would come to us, as the mills
did to the cotton.
The Times further says that one
man and team can take care of
and cultivate, on an average, ten
acres of sugar beets.
We heartily agree with that pa
per that we ao not want the an
nexation of Cuba or the Philip
pines and note that it says, that if
these islands are annexed, Manila
cheroots, free of duty, could be
sold here at a lower price than
American cigarettes are now sold
for. \\ hat we need is the indus
trial development of our own
country and there is no more
inviting field than here at the
South.

A word contest for the second
Buck Jr. range open to girls and
boys under 14 years of age will
begin on August 15, and close on
October 15. The range will be
given to the girl sending in the
largest list of English words from
the words “Bock’s Stoves and
Ranges,” Buck’s trade mark. On
ly such letters as are found in these
words can be used. The same let
ter must not appear oftener to a
word than it appears in the trade
mark. For instance the letter “b”
can only appear once in a word,
“s” may appear four times in the
! same word and “a ’“n” and “e”
twice. Proper names, foreign
words, prefixes and suffixes and
obsolete words are not allowed.
The name of each contestant must
be written on her list.
The stove is now on exhibition
in the show window.
Spring and summer shoes will

DUN a CO’S. REPORT.
Dun & Co. report, Sept. 2, the
failures for the month of August
to he the smallest recorded in five
years for any month: the wheat
crop, the largest ever harvested,
with dropping prices; corn,
though reports less satisfactory,
fallen a fraction; the advance ot
a sixteenth in cotton to 5.81, with
less favorable reports of yield, but
at the worst the crop likely to ex
ceed the country’s needs.
This last “at the worst likely to
exceed the world's needs” is too
bearish and we do not believe it is
the whole truth.
However it may be, the quoted
sentence is of very peculiar inter
est to farmers, merchants and all
of us.
Rucker, the heavy hitter, is in
the North with the cash in hand
to buy goods at 50 cents on the
dollar, which means a saving on
all purchases. Wait and watch
for his arrivals. The oulv mer
chant in town who has sold goods
at 50 cents on the dollar.
