here, to carry on their own busi
ness, it is the concern of no one
else, if these employees behave
themselves, and any interference
on the part of the colored people
here with the plans of this com
pany is a piece of presumption
that should be severely checked.
If we mistake not the sentimept
of this town, the white people will
not sympathize with this feeling
and will aid in putting it down.
Suppose that our old merchants,
carpenters, blacksmiths,tradesmen
of all kinds, professional men and
farmers were to take the position
that none others in their lines
should pursue business or labor
here, we wonld be set down by the
world as people of the grossest ig
norance and stupidity; and just

strongly suspect that .those who
were the aggressors in this quarrel
are idlers themselves and belong
to a class that has been blown
here from other parts.
We hear that women too,
were conspicuous in the move
ment—not the respectable colored
women of the city, we know. We
hope the women concerned will
remember a riot here many years
ago, in which women figured
conspicuously, and which only
brought shame and defeat upon
them.
So will it be again.

will begin, aud to-day the sams

display. It will be a pageant,

shown up to advantage.

In the afternoon the first annual
meet of the Florence Track Asso
ciation wiH take place at the new
race track. The track is in splen
did condition, aud during the
past few days has been alive with
wheels and wheelmen. At three
o’clock the races will begin and
■:x each day, Monday and Tuesd^y^
are to be run. For the first day
the races are:
1—One mile novice. 2—Half
mile open. 3—Half mile, boys
under 16. 4—Two mile handi
cap. 5—Pursuit, limit three
miles. 6—One mile paced. Be
sides the foregoing there will be
riding ou tandems, triplets and a
wheel with four seats.

an honest, clean enforcement, it
can be made to do better service.
He is in favor of building up the
common schools and upholding
all the higher institutions. 1
Express Company Not Allowed to
Increase Kates.
“The question as to whether the
Southern Express company doing
business in this State should be
allowed to increase its rates 1 cent
iu order to provide for the pay
ment by them of the war stamp,
was formally settled by the rail
road commisfeion yesterday in fav
or of the shipper. So hereafter
the regular schedule of rates will
be iu force aud the company will
“pay the freight” on the war
stamp. The commission will not
deliver themselves of an opinion
on the subject, as the matter has
already been fully discussed, aud
the position of both sides is well
understood by the readers of the
State. The commission will sim
ply write the company that they
havo decided not to allow the in
crease.”—The State.
