Were it not that we should be accused of making a trite remark we should say that it were hot to day. * There is no gratitude in the Cu ban soldier’s heart. After all, Uncle Sam can only say, “For humanity’s sake have 1 done this thing.” There has been much discussion, learned and otherwise, of the cause of the apathy of a large part of the American people regarding the present war. A correspondent of the New York Times sums up the whole truth pithily with the re mark; “The Spanish stick is not long enough to stir up this hive.” —Greenville News. Worse than that, it is a broken stick. The mayor of Chicago has vetoed the bill changing the name of Bissell street to Dewey street, on the ground that Dewey can be suf ficiently honored without robbing a respectable gentleman, who had been once governor of the State, of the posthumous honor of having a Chicago street called after him.— Columbia Kegistcr.
