Harbingers of the future are
found iu the generally favorable
crop prospects,~uot only of cereals,
but of cotton, fruits and most
products of agriculture, and a con
tinned heavy foreign demand for
American products.
In spite of unfavorable features
there were fewer failures, smaller
liabilities aud consequently small
er assets this year than in any
previous yeaf for four years past
Business failuns number 8.429
eight yer cent, fewer than a year
ago, 15 per cent, lees than in 1896
and only 3 per cent, larger than
in 1893. Liabilities, too, are

23 per cent smaller than last year

Next Monday is the fourth of
July. The business houses of our
town will he closed in honor of
the day, and doubtless there will
be several pic-nic excursions aud
fish-frying expedition At all
events it will be a day off from
business. So far aa we know there
have been no preparations for a
specific demonstration.
The Times office will be closed
too, so no paper will be issued on
that day. This is done in order
that the entire force including
carriers may spend the day iu
manner to please' themselves.
