NOW FOR
OFF FOR CUBA.
TRANSPORTS SAIL WITH
15,000 SOLDIERS.
Convoyed by a Strong Fleet—The
Official* Expect a Period of Inaction
fora Few Days—Sampson hasCleared
tlie Way.
Washington, June 13.—The first
army of invasion to Cuba is now
on its way, thirty-two transport
steamships, bearing over 15,000
officers and men convoyed by bat
tleships, cruisers, gunboats and
auxiliary craft, sixteen in number,
having actually sailed from Key
West at daybreak this morning.
An authoritative statement to this
effect was made at the war depart
ment to day, setting at rest all re
ports that the expedition was on
its way or had landed last week.
The authorities made the an
nouncement for the reason that the
time for secrecy was now past, as
the scout boats had made sure that
the path was clear before it an
nounced that no possible menace
could come from the Spanish ships
or troops, even should the enemy
know that our forces were now ad
vancing against them. With the
expedition off, officials here feel
that there will be a period of com
parative inaction for a few days.
By Thursday, at the latest, the
transports will be off Santiago, and
■“wtlf
make its landing on Cuban
soil. Admiral Sampson has
cleared the way for this undertak
ing, and little danger is appre
hended in getting ashore. It will
be after that, when tne advance is
made, that the actual dramatic de
velopments may be expected. By
that time it is likely the American
commanders will be indirect cable
communication with the authori
ties here. Admiral Sampson has
taken the shore end of the cable
landing at Guantanamo and a force
of cable experts are rapidly restor
ing .the line to working order. The
progress of this work has been so
satisfactory that one of the leading
officials of the State department
said to-night that it was hoped
this direct cable communication
wou'd be established by Thursday.
It will p it an end to the dearth of
official information concerning im
portant movements and will enable
the authorities here to keep in
close touch with those executing
the strategic movements.

Chickamauga l r aik, Ga., June
13.—Major-General Fitzhugh Lee
says he must have the First South
Carolina regiment in his command
\vhen he storms Havana.
Senator Tillman, in a letter to
Col. Alston, received this morning,
says: “1 have just visited Adju
tant General Corbin. He says
Major General Lee has made a
special request of the war depart
ment to send the South Carolina
regiment to him in Jacksonville.’*
The Senator urges Col. Alston
to insist upon having his men fully
equipped and as early as possible.
That the request will be granted
there seems to be no doubt in the
mind of the Senator.
Col. Alston thinks it will he
some time before the regiment will
be moved, as it will take consider
able time to equip and drill the
regiment.
Lieutenants Dunlay, Brown and
McGowan, the recruiting officers
appointed for the First South Car-
olina regiment, accompanied by
fifteen men left Chickamauga Park
for South Carolina to-day.

A Btortliii? iucideut, of which
Mr. John Oliver of Philadelphia,
was the subject, is narrated by
him as follows: “I was in a most
dreadful zonditiou. My skin was
almost yellow, eveu sunken, tongue
coated, pain continually in back
and sides, no appetite—gradually
growing weaker day by day. Three
physicians had given me up. For
tunately, a friend advised trying
“Electric Bitters;” and to my
g.eat joy and surprise, the first
bottle made a decided improve
ment. I continued their use for
three weeks, and am now a well
man I know they saved my life,
and robbed the grave of another
victim,” No one should fail to try
