At Madrid it ia claimed that the, fleet of Admiral Cerveras landed a immense quantity of arms and su plies for Blanco at Santiago that it will now go to Havana. WILL JOIN SAMPSON. The cruiser Columbia will join Sampson’s fleet. * THEY WILL SOON MEET. Key West, May 20—12.57 p. nr.—American war vessels are making active preparations and ex pect to sail this afternoon to meet the Spanish fleet commanded by Admiral Cerveras. ENGLAND AND AMERICA. Washington, May 20.—1.23 p. m.—It is stated in official circles that there is a complete under standing as to a tacit, offensive and defensive alliance between England and the United States. I -At-" ♦ Every fee Cream ^ DakBV’s \ Aiternoon — tuk chaklkhton puts back Vallejo, Cal, May 19.—The cruiser Charleston that sailed yes terday for Manila with ammuni tion and supplies for Admiral Dewey, is back at her berth at Mare Island navy yard, with her condensers out of order. The ac. cident is trivial, but Captain Glass concluded that it would be better to return to the navy yard and se cure the benefit of the facilities there than to repair the damage at sea. The Charleston will make another start within the next twenty-four hours. > SHUTTING OFF THE NKWH. Tampa, Fla., May 19.—All the newspaper correspondents at Tam pa to-day were notified that in fu ture all dispatches must be placed iu the hands of Lieutenant Miley, of General Shafter’s staff, for ap proval. The censorship in future will be very rigid, and it is said that it will be in force until after the invasion of Cuba takes place. It is the intention to keep the Spanish government in complete ignorance of the movements of the army, if possible, and every means will be exerted in order to do so. FRANCK IS FRIENDLY. Washington, May 19.—As a re sult of' several recent exchanges between the officials of the State Department and those of the French embassy, an agreeable un derstanding has been reached, which gives assurance of a continu ance of the traditional friendship existing between the United States and Fraace. It has served to make ear that each government has the fullest confidence in the friendly attitude of the other, and that any criticisms or animosities aroused by recent incidents in the war have not been shared by the govern ment officials of either country. The reason why politeness used to play such a part in the world was no doubt in a great measure that the avenues’ to success were everywhere controlled by people who all paid attention to breeding, and even to such little niceties ot j behavior as correct speech and pro nunciation and even articulation; hence it was impossible to win their favor without imitating them and at least similating an interest in breeding. Every one has known men who passed all their lives for “gentlemen ot the old school,” who really began their career as office boys, and had acquired their man ners by studying and trying to copy those of their employers. Now the precise opposite of this is the case. Since the possession of large amounts of money has become the test of social leadership, and since it has become possible for large numbers of wholly uneducated people to acquire this open sesame over night by ‘-striking oil,” “a corner,” or a “deal,” the avenues to success are really in the hands of the newly rich, and what do they care or know about manners? They hustled or bragged or lied or cheated their way into wealth, and they, too, in their turn will be im itated. Hence, many a young man who would formerly have aimed at making himself polite now applies rudeneee to the same end. Madrid, May 19.—A direct mes sage from Santiago de Cuba con firms the report of the arrival of the Spanish squadron there. The dispatch says the event has caused intense enthusiasm at Santiago de Cuba. I’M Baltle-Cry at Manila. The battle cry' 1 'at Manila was /Remember the Maine.” That about, from hundreds of men, rose above the din of the conflict and inspired the gunners to deadly ac curacy. It is said that the sea men were eager for hand to hand conflicts with the enemy, and the thought of the affair of Feb. 15 wrought them to a frenzy. But with all this the work on the ships proceeded with methodical pre cision. The discipline was per fect. There was no confusion any where. Out of about 300 cases only 4 persons have died in that section. The doctor is convinced that wherever vaccination has been enforced there is no danger from small pox. We would suggest to our town authorities that Dr. Ba- cot be re-appointed to vaccinate all those who are unable to pay for same, \ accination is very neces sary ami the money will be well expended in this way. Chicago, May 19.—Forty-two persons are known to have lost ! their lives, and 28 others are re ported dead as the result of the tor nadoes which devastated portions of Eastern Iowa, Western Illinois and Northern Wisconsin last night. Paul Allen, a progressive farmer of Hampton county, has 400 sheep on a 700-acre pasture. If he would sow one-half of his land in Bermu da grass and put the other half in oats, rye and other grasses, he could support 1,000 sheep on the same land.—The Spartan. Mr. B. G.
