WADE TO COMMAND.
Tampa, Fla., May—It is now
almost certain that Brigadier Gen
eral J. F. Wade will have active
xommand of the United States
troops in the field in Cuba. Both
Generals Wade and Shatter will,
it is said, accompany the expedi
tion wlitfct it sails, but the latter,
although having command with
headquarters, as he is the ranking
general, will not direct the move-
meat of the troops in the field.
Authority for such^ction, it is as
serted, was received to-day from
Washington, although nothing is
obtainable from official sources on
the subject.
The arrangements for the em
barkation of troops are being
pushed with tne utmost vigor. The
Florida and Olivette are being put
in shape for the reception of the
soldiers, and the Mascotte, which
came in to-day, will be taken in
hand to-morrow and prepared for
service as a transport.

has sent a long communication to
President McKinley, offering to
transfer the Hawaiian Islands to
the Baited States for the purpose
of its war with Spain, and to furn
ish the American ships of war in
Pacific waters with large quanti
ties of coal supplies and ammuni
