Our position upon the war quea tion is simply thi«: no war if it can be honorably averted; war if it cannot be honorably averted, but dishonor, never. There may be war—as yet we cannot tell. It all depends upon Spain Intervention is bound to come with whatever it might hap pen to bring. Peace at any price ? No. Using the words of the American Peace Society, “We ask for no policy of cowardice, but of stern self-con trol.” Between the two there is a world of difference. There is no excitement among our people. They read the news papers with eagerness, of coarse, and then go quietly about their business. But when the time comes, if it should come, they will make a characteristic response to the call of duty. When it comes to a genuine case of “Johny-get-your-gun” watch that man who has in all the piping times of peace had blood in his eye and with clenched fist has wished thjit he might prominently help in administering a castigation to Spain. Watch him, that is, if he may be found to watch.
