Clinton, March 23.—Mrs. H. C.
Bean, mother of the Rev. Dr. W.
S. Bean, died at her son’s resi
dence Tuesday morning, having
reached her 76th year. Mrs. Bean
was born in Augusta. Ga., where
all her married life was spent.
She has resided with her son in
South Carolina for more than
seven years. She was well known
in Augusta as a writer, and was a
life-long member of the First Pres- j
byterian church of that city. She 1
was buried in the Presbyterian
cemetery at this place this morn
ing at 10.30 o’clock.—The State.
Dr. Bean was pastor of the Pres
byterian church in this city several
years ago, and in his affliction
many friends in Florence will sym
pathize with him. •

taurant, has a tame deer in the
back yard adjoining the eating

Practically there is no material
change in the war situation. The
report of the hoard of inquiry is on
its way to Washington, and Presi
dent McKinley is holding confer
ences with leading members of the
Senate and of the House, both
democratic and republican. It is
understood that in the present
emergency the president desires
patriotic dimity without reference
to party.

Monday, accompanied by a mes

Washington, March 22.—The
cabinet meeting to-day lasted
something over an hour and was
devoted exclusively to the Spanish
situation in general and to the
forthcomiug report of the Maine
court of inquiry in particular. The
tone of the discussion was very firm
and that there must come an end
to the present state of affairs in
Cuba.
Secretary Long authorized the
statement that the understanding
