It seems hard to get a quorum of the Stockholders of the Mutual Fire Insurance Association of Spartanburg. We have often had like trouble in Florence in various organizations, and it as often hap pens that those who persistently refuse to attend important meetings are the loudest-mouthed complain ants if anything goes wrong. The business agent gives it to the members publicly in this way : "Now, in the name of business and common sense, I request you to attend and know what confronts you as stockholders. I appeal to you as people of intelligence and shall expect a full response. Come and reason together for your own benefit. It is cheering to note that there is Unusual activity among the farm- lore corn, more oats, less cotton” seems to be the motto and—whether or not the conventions of farmers in many of the counties succeed in getting a pledge or agreement among themselves not to plant more than a prescribed area in cotton—their own interests seen clearly in the light of dearly bought experience are moving them in that direction. This is as it should be. There is a boom too among the fertilizer mills. The News and Courier reports all Charleston companies unusual ly active and that they have re fused to quote for hundreds of tons, because of the fear that they will not he able to supply the de mand. Those of us then in the towns— some getting up news that the people must have—some anxious ly looking for a promised fee—some lor customers that do rot come, and all for an advance in the price of lots, can at least be grateful that the farmers are as busy as bees, and that the great fertilizer indus try is in a very prosperous condi tion.
