The Lee County Ledger has ap

every possible success.
A suspected case of small pox
has appeared ia Columbia. The
health authorities have taken
prompt action, and, if it be small
pox, every effort will be made to
prevent a spread of the disease.
It is very well that Commander
Sigsbee has entire control of the
diving investigation of the Maine’s
hull, but, since the precedent is
established, no harm could come
of allowing representatives of Spain
to witness.the operation.
Skin Diseases.
For the speedy and permanent cure of ou e*»t by land*^ of
letter, salt rhentn and eczema, Cham-
berlain’s Eye and Skin Ointment is
without an eqnal. It relieves the itch
ing and smarting almost instantly and
its continued use effects a permanent
cure. It also cures itch, barber’s itch,
scald head, sore nipples, itching piles,
chapped hands, chronic sore eyes and
granulated lids.
The story of the fire is not yet
ended. Further accounts of its
destructiveness are published to
day. Many people in our county
have suffered serious loss, and
without'doubt there arc losses not
yet reported.
A serious question is:
such a fire get out?
How did
It will take a thorough investi
gation to ascertain the cause of the
Maine’s destruction. If hostile
hands had anything to do with it,
Uncle Sam’s duty is clearly mani
fest. However, the fact that the
explosion was not due to accident
should be established beyond all
doubt. In matters of such grave
import hasty criticism, let alone
hasty action, is altogether unwise
and may recoil.
Iteefinm a Human Snake.
Rome, Ga., Feb. 20.—One ol the
strangest and most marvelous
stories ever known here has come
to light in the case of Miss Carrie
Ponder,
Three years ago she was a hand
some young woman bloeming with
health, living in Walker county
near the Cohuta mountains.
One day, while picking some
berries in a field, she was bitten
on the third finger of the left hand
by a rattlesnake.
The wound was cauterized and
she was stupefied with whiskey,
but the poison was not eradicated
as proven by subsequent events.
She went into a gradual decline,
and her movemente* assumed the
characteristics of those of a snake.
She began to lose flesh and her
disease baffled the skill of the best
physicians.
She would pull the cover over
her head and slyly peep out with
a snake-like glittering in her eyes
On some occasions she would
imitate a snake in every way.
She died Thursday night at 10 -
50 o’clock, an hour at which the
clock on the mantle had stopped
fo three successive nights
Miss Ponder was 28 years old
and belonged to a well-kn
family in this section. Her b
was taken to Tunnill Hui for >v.....
yesterday.
