bat the revelations and recom

wholesome things to the body

The referendum on the liquor
questien has been indefinitely
postponed- Mr. Simkius said
“are we afraid to submit this mat
ter to the white people of South
Carolina ?’’ Dr. Wyche called it
child’i play to dictate to the demo
cratic party.
We leave the logic of this reply
to ear readers. When did the
Democratic Convention or the
Democratic party become greater
than the people themselves ?
The public printiug baa gone
to the Bryan Printing Company
very worthy and competent peo
ple to do the work. The commit
tee claim that the award was made
to the “lowest responsible bidder.”
The Stste’e bid was by 9869.70
the lowest pf all the bids and
backed as claimed by high and
ample guarantees for the faithful
performance of the printiug. The
olsae vote, 6 to 7, rather verifies
the claims of the State and makes
the judgement of the majority as
to the value of its bid a matter of
indifference. So after all the
door ie left open wide enough for
the play of opinion and political
neceeiity-
We have no donbt the State would
well and promptly have performed
the work, and the people should,
at least, appreciate ite work for
the reduction of the cost of the
public printing and for it* low
bid, which have no donbt saved
thousands to the public treasury.
