Yet* Takea—Lacking for Adjournnieiil.
The house of repreaentafves at
the oloae of the day session yester
day received the report of the
special joint committee appointed
to look into the matter of the ear
liest possible day for adjournment
and received it as .information.
The report fixed Wednesday of
uext wsek as ths final day.
As soon as its third reading
calendar had been taken up yes
terday the house resumed ths
censideretiou of Mr. Childs’ pro
hibition measurs, which it had
pravioualy refuted to kill. There
wae no little sorprise when Mr.
Steveueou withdrew for Mr. Pol
lock the amendment he had offer
ed. Then there was elaborate dis
cussion upon the merits of the
bill, some of the speeches being
able ones. That of Mr. McCul
lough on behalf of prohibition was
a strong argument, well delivered.
Many of the speakers dealt with
the liquor situation in exhaustive
and painstaking manner and
much was said for and against the
preseut system of handling the
liquer traffic iu South Carolina.
Mr. Liviagatou offered as an
ameudmeut au absolute prohibi
tion measure. This wa* finally
voted down. Before auy decisive
vote on the merits of the bill prop
er could be reached, however, the
hour for recess came and the
foither diacuesion of the measure
went over until this moruiug,
when it will be resumed immed
iately after third reading bills.
The State, Feb. 9.
control met and decided whet
they would do about continuing
iu their present quarters or mov-
inr elsewhere.
Colonel Vaooe had expreased
the opinion that $176 per month
was steep rent, but Attorney Lyles
expressed a willingness to submit
the rent figure to arbitration in
case the State board of control
considered it too high.
Rent and damagt-s for pn*t occu
pancy of the agricultural hall will
have to be settled for. Mr. Lyle’s
clients’ claims, if allowed, are se
cured by good and sufficient bond*.
The winning of the agricultural
hall case by no means carries with
it validification of tbe Blue Ridge
scrip. If that is ever'-validified. it
will only f»e after a long ami stub
born fight, in the courts. Attorney
Lyles’ next nieve in that came will
he watched for with lively inter-
-st. The tax burden will have to
bn largely it>creu*eii if he succeeds
in saddling that d-bt upon South
Carolina—Columbia Record, Feb.
