and, though he did not do the

done well. We know nothing of
his arrangements to undertake such
a magnitudinous job, but wheth

work, we cannot see that the
change will work practical good to
anybody or anything. Going
further, it seems to us that for the
sake of justice, pure and simple,
Mr. Caivo having already begun
should have been allowed to go
on to the end. What a glorious
opportunity for extending an act
of courtesy and kind consideration
did the legislature miss !

IN. THKN OIT!
Two of Governor Ellerbe’s ap
pointees have recently suffered.
Comptroller-General Epton, after
serving only three months, had to
give way to Mr. Derham of Horry,
and Mr. Chas. B. Caivo, the pub
lic printer, after completing about
half his work, found a supplantor
in the person of Mr. Parks of
Orangeburg. The legislature sim
ply undid what the governor did,
making no apologies and offering
■o excuse.
Politics is politics, and it is a
game at which not the chief execu
tive alone can play. The legisla
ture can play too. For political
reasons, we presume to say, Mr.
Epton was appointed and for pre
cisely the same reasons Mr. Der
ham was elected. Thia little game
of politics will end on the date of
the next general election with, per
haps, one of these two as the win
ner. As to practical ability, from
what we know of Mr. Epton and
fr#m what we hear of Mr. Derham,
both are competent men.
For the change of public print
ers we see neither good nor valid
reasons Ur Caivo was filling the Torep * lr,Orpar " 0lie,ther ' Bn>*m»bkta.
