Ifc seems that the Florida special, No. 37, has the right of way to the junction, about a mile this side of the place where the aceidunt oc curred, but the special was late and Conductor Webb, iu charge of the local train for Columbia had orders to meet the special at the eight-mile siding, one mile the other side of the junction, if it had time to make the .siding by 7:19. At 7:17 Engineer Hall of No. 52 was within 200 yarda of the siding and had applied his brakes, preparatory to going into the sid ing. Baggage Master McDuffie remarked to Capt. Webb that they had plenty of time to get into the siding. He wasloolringat his watch which pointed to 7:17. Then there w-as a terrific noise, aud the two trains came together. This is about all that can be told of the accident at present. No. 52 had just come up th« loug grade this side of the siding, and brakes having been applied pre paratory to going into the siding, had slackened speed considerably. No. 37 was coming at full speed, probably 50 miles au hour. Con ductor Bullock of the special ex pected to meet the local at the junction and Engineer Neely was running at full speed. The impact was terrific. Train No. 37 was was pulled by engine No. 14 and was composed of six Pullman cars. Train No. 52 was pulled by engine No. 17, and was composed of a combination mail and express car, a combination second class and b ggage car and a first-class coach. Bo*th engines and teuders were completely demolished, the engines being turned completely over and lay about a car length frerm the point where they came together at the side of the track. The front end of the combination mail and express car of No. 52 was demol ished, and about half of the first Pullman car of No. 37, which was a combination baggage car and employes sleeping car, as well as Bt ' IY' house now are all convalescent. ^ All fear of the spread of the die- 1 ease 13 at an end, and people are beginning to wonder at the ex citement which^existed some weeks ago.—Register.
