Kcv. Richard Carroll, who spoke
to 3,000 negroes at Sumter on
Monday, has thoroughly at heart
the best interests of his race. His
address was a remarkable and
strong deliverance, was full of
sound, solid and genuinely good
advice, and contained many
gems of expression. His people
cannot do better than to heed his
wisewords.
FOR THK FARMER’* GOOD.
In union there is strength.
On Monday the fanners of Florence
county organized a cotton growers’
association and called a meeting
to be held on sales’ day in Febru
ary. Certain gentlemen were ap
pointed to organize township asso
ciations, and to make the county
association a thoroughly organized
body each township will elect
three delegates to the next meet
ing.
We hope the organizers appoint
ed will do their work well, so that
a large and representative body of
cotton growers may assemble here
on the first Monday in February.
Every farmer in the county, wheth
er he plant a large or small num
ber of acres, should joim the move
ment which has for its object
nothing but the good of him who
tills the soil. The question of
reducing the cotton acreage will
doubtless be passed upon, and uni
ty of action on the part of the
farmer is the one thing needful. A
reduction of acreage by a few,
with the great majority adhering
to the same old plan, would have
no effect at all and wauld defeat,
in fact, the very object of the un
ion. Other questions of interest
to farmers will be discussed, and
we sincerely hope—nay, we con
fidently predict, that this meeting
will be productive of permanently
good results.
In union there is strength.
WISE WORDS.
Extract Fram Rev. Rlobsrd Canwll'a AS-
dreta to Ike Colored People of Suiater.
Rev. Richard Carroll delivered
a splendid address to a large com*
pany of colored people at Sumter
on Monday. It is too long for
publication in these columns, but
quoted below is a striking extract
therefrom relating to homes:
“We will never be the equal of
other races unless we cease to live
in one-room cabins and shanties.
It will not do for grandpa, grand
ma, wife and husband, sons and
daughters to sleep in the same
room. There are white landhold
ers who will give you the lumber
and nails if you will do the build
ing. Some of them tell me the
negroes are too lazy to build,
others say they don’t want any
better houses. The house is the
greatest institution on earth for
good or evil; yoa can’t make a
great, good, patriotic and intelli
gent race if you live in low, wicked
filthy and ungodly homes. The
home is the foundation of society,
morality and religion. It is very
hard to train up children right in
the schoolhouse and Sunday
School if their homes are polluted.
They must have good, upright and
intelligent mothers and fathers,
and a family altar.
We do not want to govern the
country until we learn to govern
the home. Defective homes will
bring a defective government in
church and State. I must confess
that we have plenty of church and
Sunday religion, hut not enough
at home. 1 like to see good homes
owned and paid for by negroes.
These are the most reliable and
best citizens; very few of this class
commit crime.
They are the white man’s best
neighbors, and strange to say,
they are poor politicians.”
