The new order of things is on.
The constables have lost their
official character and Charleston
knows no more the Metropolitan
police.
By the removal of the consta
bulary the duty of enforcing the
dispensary law devolves upon the
towns. While heretofore it has
been a sort of divided duty be
tween the constabulary and local
police, now there are no consta
bles and all ihe work must be
done bj the local authorities.
Realizing the change of conditions
and the increase of responsibility,
Mayor W. H. Day has issued the
subjoined additional instrnctions
to the city police force. It will
be seen thu.t they are clothed with
full power to act and to bring all
offenders to justice.

Coi eidering the fact, that, by a

own officers, and in further con

in detecting any violation of the
dispensary law, and bring to trial
any person or persons, who may be
guilty of same. Policemen are now
clothed with full power to act in

perform their duties in a positive
but pleasant manner. The city

of all good citizens in carrying oat

There have been good tobacco
sales during the week, and the
weed has gone at satisfactory
prices. In addition to tobacco
brought by wagon to this market
ehipments have been received from
abroad. Yesterday Lamar tobac

ment was rsceived from that
place. Cartersville has also
shipped tobacco to Florence, and
to-day a quantity sent fro4i
Marion county is leing prepared •
for sale. A prominent “Puddiu
Swamp” planter has been beard
to say that Florence is the best
market in South Carolina, and so
it goes.
Only yesterday one who knows
whereof he speaks said that prices
are “way up” in Florence, and
others have said the same thing
And tobacco will continue to
come yiis way.
