the condemned murderer, sen
tenced to be hanged the 13th of
next month. The petition was
signed by Judge Thos. H. Sutton,
Solicitor Seaweli, Clerk of the
Court Cyrus Morphy, Dr. Mc
Duffie, Dr. Nash and a number of
other prominent citizens. The re
spite is asked on account of the
prisoner’s physical condition.
Purvis has consented to have
another operation performed, and
this afternoon the county physi
cian and Dr. McDuffie will tap his
lungs for more pus. This is a dan

A LOSS TO THE STATE.
Death of Col. Jamm MrCutchan. of VV'il-

Kiugstree, S. C., Sept. 26.—
Colonel James McCutcheu died
very suddenly at his home at lu-
diantown, this county, last night.
Colonel McCutcheu was about
68 years old, and was one of the
most prominent men in this sec
tion. He represented Williams
burg in both brauches of the legis
lature, and was always alive to the
lute resin of his constituents aud
community. His family connec
tions are largi and among the best
people of the State.
Colonel McCutchen was a mem
ber of the State Fair Association,
and always worked for the up
building of that eociety. He was
considered a pillar in the Indian-
town tTeebyterian church, of which
he was a iifelwng member. He was
an early graduate of the Sonth
Carolina College, which institution
always had his support He en
listed in the Confederate army as
captain in the Fifteenth South
Caroliua and was rapidly promoUd
uutil|he reached a colonelcy.

of Mrs. J. P. Russell of this city,
ihe news of his death came to her
like a blow yesterday, aud last
night Mr. aud Mrs. Russell and
family left for ludiantown. He
has visited our town—in fact, was
here only a short time ago—aud
his friends here will learn with
deep pain of his death.]

Onr Board of Health is Rightly I’slug It*
Effort* to Keep Yellow Fever Out of
Florence.
Our city board of health has
taken action iu the premises and
Florence is quarantined against
all points infected with yellow
fever. Baggage aud freight from
the infected districts will nut be
allowed to come into town. The
railroad companiee has been noti
fied, aud will lend the town every
aid in its power to keep the dread
disease out.
It was known to the city Health
Officer that the AL G. Field Min
strel troupe would pass through
Florence last night en route
to Wilmington. On Thareday
night the troupe gave a perform
ance in Atlanta, were coming di
rectly from that point, and would
have spent last night in FI
Our board of health deemed it
wise to be discreet, and the cars—
their own pars—iu which the mem
bers of the troupe were traveling
were ordered stopped before reach
ing Florence.
This morning the troupe was
allowed to go through toward Wil
mington.
While upon this subject, it is
well to etate that Mr. H. H. Hus
bands, the city health officer, will
furuish health certificates free of
charge upou application from those
who may desire to leave town. We
thiuk it would be wise for travel
lers to take advantage of this as,
after leaving towu, there may be
trouble iu getting back. Such
certificates are required at Charles
ton and Wilmington, and while ifc
is not necessarily incumbent upon
people going out from Florence to
get them, yet it would be wisdom
on their part to do eo.

Athens, Sept. Sept. 26.—A largo
meeting was held this afternoon in
Concrode square, where a resolu
tion was adopted calling upon
King George and the cabinet to
renew the war with Turkey rather

of peace offored by the
peace conference. Most of the ad
dressee were bellicose, one speaker
making a violent attack upou the
King and Crown Prince Constan
tine. The police endeavored to
arrest him, but he escaped with
the assistance of the crowd.
