Mr. Allen Robinson left for Sa vannah, Ga., last night to resume his work. Mr. Gabriel Levy a representa- tiue of the Armour Soap Company is in the city to-day. Miss Maggie McTaggart is visit ing the family of Mr. W. A. Cot- tiughair. in this city. S. W. G. Shipp, Esq.,’ ispent yesterday down about Lynches on professional business. Mr. L. Kelly, a successful farm er of the Sardis section of our county, is in the city to-day. Miss Mary Stroud is at home again after a delightful stay with relatives in Sanford, N. C. Mr. E. D. Kyle, General Solic-^ iting agent of the Seaboard Air 1 Line spent yesterday in the city. ! Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Waters are visiting the family of Mr. J. F. of Howie in Darlington county. Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Royall and little daughter are at home again after a short stay in Goldsboro, N. C. Mr. Chas. Barron of Columbia passed through the city last night en route to his home from Wrights- i ville Sound. 1 Miss Mary Ann McClenaghan has returned from the mountains and is once more at her post at Penny’s store. Mr. C. S. McCullough, one of Darlington’s prominent business men, is spending the day with friends in Florence. Miss Nellie McCullough, of Darlington, and her guest, Miss Hessie Burch of this city, were interested witnesses of the Labor Day exercises. Miss Mary Galloway who has been a guest at the country home of Mr. R. M. McCown returned to Dillon this morning. Mrs. A. J. Johnson, after a pleasant visit to her parents in this city, returned to her home in Hartsville last night. Mr. Theodore Kuker, Jr., who spent the month of August at that delightful resort, Flat Rock, N C, returned home last night. Mr. B. H. Rucker returned last night from the Northern 'markets. Watch for his announcements in the columns of this paper.. • Messrs. J. A. and O. B. Nettles, of Dillon, who have been spending several days with relatives in this city, returned home this morjiing. Mrs. J. P. Myers and Herman Fryer passed through Florence yesterday afternoon en route to Hartsville to attend the Welsh Neck High School. Some weeks ago John Carter, the negro who shot Mr. Erasmus Turner from ambush and who was sentenced to eight years im prisonment, escaped from the State penitentiary. Tip* governor offered a reward of $100 for his capture, aud for the past two or three weeks Mr. Eli Harrell, of this county, has been quietly on the watch. Carter had the temer ity to return to his old stamping ground, and as a result the high sheriff of the county will to-mor row morniug escort him to his new stamping ground within the walls of the State prison. Sheriff McLendon had supplied Mr. Harrell with handcuffs. Yes terday Mr. Harrell came up ou Carter who was picking cotton in a field near Savage. Carter swore that he would not be taken, but Mr. Harrell drew his pistol, and the burly, strapping negro, in wholaaomw fear of leaden ballets, be slipped upofi mt wriats. Thus decorated re was placed in a buggy and irought to Florence. Ou the way hither he evidenced some disposition to kick, but the presence of cold steel brought him ,o terms, and last night Mr. Harrell safely lodged him in jail whence Sheriff McLendon will take him to Columbia to-morrow morning. The reward will go to Sheriff McLendon, who found oht. that the negro was in this county, and to Mr. Harrell, who effected the capture. • Mi.i— 11 " - Card From Mr .lohiiMon. Some of my enemies are circu- ating the report that I voted for Wilson for Congress against Mc- Lauriu I wish to deny this, and brand it as a campaign lie. There was only one white democrat who voted at Marion precinct for Wil son and bis name can be given. In the first part of the campaign a report was circulated that I had voted for Deas, and witn the assis tance of the Sheriff of Marion connty and one of the managers at the polls at that tince I proved that to be a lie. Mr. McClam sold 1,858 pounds, two barns lugs aud all, at au av erage price of nearly 17 cents. Of this, a pile containing 126 pounds brought 31 s cents, aud another containing 320 pounds brought 214 cents. He was simply de lighted, and so w^s Mr. J. E. Play er’s from 8 to 1 from 6 to 30. were me ie doi gentle they, bti again w titi : Inquiry Editor Daily '1*1 nua: Has the city anymore right to commit a nuisance against a citi zen than a citizen agafhst the city J For the last four weeks a stag nant pool of water leakjng from a hydrant a few feet above our stores has produced an unhealthy and dis agreeable odor. The place has no means of dranage and complaint has been made to the Mayor, Sanitary nspector, and Superintendent of streets. All of these are authori ties on such matters and yet all are jowerless to remedy this great nuisance. Now we appeal to our city council and respectfully ask that they will appoint some officer to look after this matter if they layen’t one already with sufficient power to attend to it.
