Coflee and It* Uses. Misa Lizzie Moiasou entertained a few friends last evening. Sheriff McLendon has gone to Monroe, N. C., as a witness against Magee and Trayler charged with forgery. These parties were arrested by Sheriff McLendon in this city some months ago, and were taken from here to Monroe. Mr. Geo. Turbeville returned last night from Smithfield, N. C., where he has been for the last few days acting as a prosecuting wit ness against four men, two white and two colored. These men are charged with robbing the depot at Smithfield, and were brought to justice by detective Turbeville. The Grand Jury found a true bill against them all and the case is now being tried. In Turkey the American board of foreign missions (Congrega- tioualists) began work seventy- three years ago. During this period it has sent to that country 700 missionaries and expended on their maintenance more than $8,500,000. At present it has in the field a stall’ of 176 mission- aiies from America, with 878 na tive helpers, of whom 100 are preachers, and connected with the board are 125 churches, with 12,- 787 members, and an aggregate adherence of 30,000. When there are in a community epidemics of typhoid fever, chole ra, erysipelas, scarlet fever and the various types of malarial fev er, which are transmitted almost entirely through the medium of food and drink, coffee is a valua ble agent and may lie used as a drink instead of water. It is a valuable agent in assist ing in the digestion of food and aids the blood in taking up more nourishment than it would with out it. It quickens the circulation of the blood and respiration. It is also stimulating and re freshing (due to the caffeine it contains). In tiding over nervousness in emergencies it is a sovereign reme dy. As a stimulate and caloric gen erator in cold weather it is 100 per cent, ahead of whiskey or other liquors.] As a disinfectant it is one of no small usefulness in the sick cham ber.—New York Tribune. Bread Going up With Wheat. Dollar wheat means a good many things besides enhanced happi ness for the farmer. It means, for instance, an increase in the cost of a loaf of bread. The increase will be felt first by the bakers, but it must ultimately be felt by the consumer. The price of flour has State Manager, FLORENCE, S. A young woman, with some am bitions as a painter, submitted specimens of her skill to a success ful artist the other evening, and his criticism is of such wide appli cation that we desire to share it with our readers. “Don’t copy copies,’’ said he. “You have copied this landscape from a picture that was itself an imperfect copy, with the result that all its errors are reproduced and magnified. Go out into nature and paint directly from your own landscape. Or, if you must copy, copy from a master piece. Anything else is not worth while.” Yes; and, young Chris tian, do not pattern your life after the life of some one else, who, at best, is only an imitation of the perfect One.
