A visit to the New Coast Line
shifting yard reveals the projec
tion of a gigantic enterprise. A
large force of hands is at work
putting in brick culverts and im
mense piles are being sent into
the ground. The swamp is to be
thoroughly drained, for which
purpose canals have been dug, and
when this is completed the filling
up process will begm. The work
is being pushed with rapidity, and
in short time the company hopes
to have the yard finished.
A visit there now will’repay any
of our citizens.

Frank Jackson, a colored mao,
who farms on the McKay place
just beyond Black Creek, lost a
tobacco barn by fire last night be
tween the hours of ten and eleven.
He had just finished curing and
there were about 200 pounds of to
bacco in the barn, all of which
was destroyed. He estimates the
total loss at about £(>5 00.

The First Hale.
The first bale of new cotton was
brought in to-day by Mr. 8. M.
Gregg of Mars Bluff. It weighed
570 pounds and sold for 7 cents,
being classed as middling. Mr. R.
O. Commander, representing J. H.
Sloan of Charlotte, was the buyer.
