Fitz simmons, of the N. E. R. R., was in Florence this morning. Mr. L. R. Ives, who has been visiting among the truck farms of Virginia returned home last night. Mr. H. R. Cully, soliciting agent of the A. C. Line with head quarters at Columbia, is in the city to-day. Mrs. G. B. Graves, of Chatta nooga, Tenn., who has been visit ing Sullivan’s Island, has returned to^Florence and is the guest of Miss Gertrude Jacobi. Mr. {. H. Smith, of Timmons- ville, a popular koight of the grip, spent a fewjiours in the city last evening. TjMr. A. G. Kollock, editor *»f the Darlington News, passed through Florence last night on^bis way to Charleston. Mr. Chas. Williams, Mrs. Beu lah Wilkins and Miss Rebecca Turheville are spending the day in the country. Vbr. Jas. Evans returned last night from Anderson, hut left this morning for Cliadbourne, N. C. on a professional call. Mr. Louis Day, manager of the A. C. Line restaurant at Florence, has gone on a visit to his old home in North Carolina. Riser, a divinity student at Newberry has arrived in the city to take charge of the Lutheran congregation in the place of Rev. Mr. Trauger. Mr. Yancey will make Sumter his headquarters. Westbrook, who has been m the city several weeks prospecting, returned to Wilming ton this morning having failed to make arrangements for his truck farm. Mrs. J. J. Fowler and daughter Miss Nellie Heiser, of Wilming ton, N. C, were in the city a short while last night. Mrs. Fowler is a niece of Mr. Chas. Bultmann, of our city. Capt. S. V. Bunting, one of the genial Pullman conductors, was seen at the depot this morning. Capt. Bunting has many friends in Florence who are always pleased to meet him. Mr. K. C. Barrett, the wide awake and popular route agent of the Southern Express company, has returned from an extended trip to the upper part of th^ State. Mr. Barrett will spend the day in the city with his family. Capt. W. F. There are only six prisoners in the county jail. Dr. Brooks Rutledge has re turned from the Southern Dental association that has been *n ses sion at Old Point Comfort, Ya. Before returning home Dr. Rut ledge paid a visit to the family of his brother at.Hagerstown, Md. The merchants of Florence are determined to protect the farm ers and secure for them the best prices for their tobacco. They at tend the sales at the warehouses daily and bid on the tobacco. A conclaveof Knights of Damon was organized last evening in Pythian Hall and the following oflicers were elected to serve until their successors are elected : Commander, F. H. McLeod. Starr, Jr. Sentinel, W. B. Rowell*. Local Deputy, H. H. Husbands. This order promises to have a very large membership as there are over 30 names down as charter members. Gen. The veterans of Florence county had a great and glorious time at Mnldrow’s mill yesterday. They had a basket pic nie, aud what with a happy remiuiscential iutur- course, a swapping of yarns and a bountiful repast, they enjoyed themselves as only those who stood shoulder to shoulder in ranks can. About sixty veterans were pres ent. Talks were made by Col. K. W* Lloyd, Dr. J. F. Culpepper, Dr. P. B. Bacot and Mr. W. E. Mc- Knight. Mr. T. J. Powers— “Tom” Powers—, a one-time engi neer on the Coast Line, was there, and with some of his good old war stories he furnished rare entertain ment for the company. The death of the old hero,’ Gen eral Samuel McGowan, was re ferred to mote than once during the day, and these veterans to do donor to his memory appointed Col. Lloyd, Dr. Culpepper, Dr. Bacot. and Mr. McKnight as a committee to draw up a set of res olutions During the day the question of truthful history was freely dis cussed, and, as a matter of course, the unanimous opinion was that a history doing full justice to tha South should be written. In the afternoon the veterans went home glad that they had been there.
