A Washington dispatch to the
New York Journal says: “The Re
publican leaders of the Senate are
agaiust the Dinglev bill us it now
stands. They intend to cut down
every schedule imposed bv that
measure. In so doing they put
themselves in opposition to Presi
dent McKinley. That does n >t
matter. They iutend to show the
Executive that he is not the legia-
tivo branch of the Government.
They do not mean to pass a meas
ure which, in its present form,
threatens party diasster and defeat.
They intend to amend the bill so
that the author himself will not
recognize it when it is sent back to
the House. Tuey will stand by
their amendments until the house
gives in, be that until the expira-
tiou of the present Congress. They
have giveu heed to the warnings
of the Democrats. Fault is found
with the measure from beginning
to end. Nearly every rate, they
hold, is too high.”

the big St. Louis tornado. This
bicycle, owned in East St. Louis,
was struck by three barrels of
syrup, a tierce of lard and one
barrel of vinegar. Absolutely the
only uninjured parts are the saddle
