Six hundred people were rescued
yesterday on the Arkansas side of
the the river and taken to Mem
phis, but there are flood districts
so situated that (relief boats cannot
reach the stricken ones.
On island 39, 100 sufferers and
considerable live stock were res-
cured by the steamer Itasca.
Neither man nor beast had tasted
food for over 24 hours. Human
beings and helpless brutes are
huddled together awaiting assis
tance all along the Iron Mountain
and Kansas City, Fort Scott and
Gulf tracks. Five hundred people
were forced to flee from the floods
in Dyer and Obion counties, Ten
nessee.
The latest break in the levee
system in this district occurred at
7 o’clock this evening near Austin
Miss., 100 miles south. Particu
lars are not available.
Reports from other points in
that section indicate positive dis
trust of a great deal of the system
on the Mississippi side and other
breaks are expected to occur at
any moment.
All that money, engineering
and labor can do is being exerted,
but the water pressurj is very
great. The break reported at
Glendale, Miss., proved incorrect,
though to-night’s break is in that
vicinity.

A Tribute to the Kioren.e lluml.
Mr. A. Gaiuey, band master of
the Coker Band of Darlington, in
recent letter to The Musical Kn-
the interest of brass bauds, or
chestras and the musical public,
paid the Florence Silver Cornet
Band a high tribute. Mr. Gainey,
on the occasion <>f the presenta
tion of the play entitled, “Captain
Dick” by the Darlington Dramatic
Company, played with our hand
in front of the opera house aud
afterward, during the play, enjoy
ed the selections rendered by the
band. The following lines are
taken from the letter: “I found
that they handled standard music,
aud well too, from the best writers
of the day.’
It has been quite a while since I
have heard such selections as these
gentlemen handled, rendered with
so much expression and so small a
number of players.”
The boys of the band appreciate
