supporting? Is it of value, di
rectly and indin^tly, to the city
of Florence? From a business
standpoint, does it add anything
to the character of the town?
These questions are intended for
the hiiiinesH men.
Yesterday one of our business
men gave an instance where an
advertisement in the Daily Times
brought to him immediate returns,
lie had something to sell, made
the fact known in the columns ( f
the aforesaid paper, and sold it.
Other business m«n can do the
same thing.
In principle we are opposed to
the metropolitan police law, and
had therefore hoped the system
would lie removed from Charles
ton. The mayor and a majority
of the board of aldermen have
pledged themselves to see to the
enforcement of the dispensary
law, and the fact that seven aider-
men have refused so to do should
not, we think, deter the governor.
These gentlemen favor the re
tention of the present system, are
anxious to see the law enforced,
and, whether yr not their names
are attached to the agreement, will
do all in their power to stop the
illicit sale of liquor.
The object of the governor is to
give to the present city council
that which it has never had, a tair
chance, and taking that view of it
we do not see how these gentle
men can stultify th.^mielves in
signing the required pledge. Even
if their efforts should result in
utter failure, there cau be no harm
in trying.
