Reiulauder, a white man, w ho was arrested Monday for beating his wife is undergoing a preliminary trial before Magis- COLORED STATE FAIR- A Permanent Organ xati.m Formed Yerter- day. The colored State Fair and Edu cational Association met at the Court House last night in pursu ance to the call of the temporary organization formed in this city last November. A permanent or ganization was perfected, constitu tion and by laws were made gov erning the same. The proposed capital stock is to be $5,000 divid ed into 1,000 shares at $5 each. Representatives from a large number of counties in* the State were present, and the following named persons were elected a com mission to secure a permit from the Secretary of State to the end that the organization may be char tered: R. B. Anderson, S. E. Smith, Jos. C. Jackson, Lewis Duckett, W. P. Corley, Q. F. Holmes, W. D. Chappelle, C. G. Garrett, C. P. T. White, E. H. Coit, G. W. Murray, E. J. Saw yer, A. P. Dunbar, W. T. An drews, T. J. Williams. The commissioners elected C. F. Holmes secretary and treasurer, to whom all moneys may be sent, in payment for stock. The books are to be opened at once in Columbia.—Columbia Register. Mit* Lizzie Tillman, who ha» been visiting the family of Mr. J. E. Miss Minnie Hodge, of Carters- ville, and Mr. M. G. Rose, of Wil son, N. 0., were married near Car- tersville Sunday morning. Both the contracting parties are well known in Florence. Miss Hodge lived with the family of Mr. M. H. Bass in this city several years. Mr. Rose has been in this neigh borhood for several years, having clerked some months in Mr. E. F. Douglas’ store. The marriage was quite roman tic. Mr. Rose, arriving at Carters- ville, walked three miles in the country to the place chosen for the secret marriage. Not mar.y hours afterward Miss Hodge and the preacher appeared on the scene and the marriage took place. The case of Willoughby against the city council of Florence con sumed the entire morning hour yesterday and resulted in a non suit. W. F. Clayton, Esq., repre sented the plaintiff, and G. G. Thompson, Esq., the defendant. After dinner the case of E. F. Willoughby against the North Eastern Railroad Company was taken up. Some time was con- sumed in forming a jury and read ing the pleadings, and, as a conse quence, at night fall not much pro gress had been made. This morn ing examination of witnesses for the plaintiff was resumed, contin ued and ended, and this afternoon witnesses for the defense are pass ing through the same ordeal. In all probability, the jury will not retire until after noon to-morrow. The attorneys for the plaintiff are W. F. Clayton, Esq., of the Flor- . nee bar, andT. Y. Williams, Esq., of the Lancaster bar, and the de fendant is represented by T. M. Gilland, Esq., of the Kingstree bar, Major T. G. Barker of the Charleston bar, and P. A. Willcox, Esq., of the Florence bar. Great Railroad Office. Philadelphia, Pt.., Feb. 2—The vacancy in the management of the Pennsylvania railroad caused by the death of George B. K >bert» will be filled tomorrow at a special meeting of the board of directors of the company. It is understood (hat but one name will be pre sented »t the meeting, that of Frank Thompson, and he will be given the unanimous vote of the board. 4th Week. 1st Day. An Uninteresting Session of the Legislatnre Tnesday. Greenwood County Assured—Mr. Garris’ Greek Letter Fra ternity Bill—Night Ses sions Begun—Other Matters. There was no session of the State Senate yesterday morning, but the house met at noon and remained in session for two hours. The at tendance was very slim, and the members came very near breaking a quorum with leaves of absence. The two hours’ session was de voted to the consideration of new county matters principally, and the house indicated its purpose to pass bills establishing new counties in accordance with the terms of the elections held, and not hatnp ring the new counties with unexpected provisions. A partial test wa- made of the question of fixing an early adjournment, the house indi cating its desire to adjourn at the earliest possible day. The effort of Mr. de Loach to save 10 square miles of territory which in accordance with the re cent election held for Cherokee county is to become a part of that county, to York county, most sig nally failed. There were several important new bills introduced during the session. Among them was Mr. Haselden’s measure to force the railroads to obey the interstate commerce commission. Another was offered by Mr. Jno. P. Thom s Jr., providing for a superint.-ndent of banks. Mr. Garris has introduced a bill to prohibit Greek letter fraternities or any organizations of like nature in Siate institutions. Tne house consumed much time in the consideration of the bill to establish the new county of Green wood, but it was finally ordered to a third reading. Mr. Rainsford’s bill to provide compensation for the members of the boards of township commis sioners and chairmen of said boards while serving as members of the county boards of commissioners was taken up and ordered to a third reading. Mr. Winkler’s bill to exempt soldiers and sailors in the service of the State of South Carolina, or of the Confederate States in the war between the States, from tak ing out the license as hawker and peddler required by Revised Stat utes 1893, of South Carolina, was called up and passed.
