Secretary of the Treasury. Mr.
Gage is a successful banker, and
enjoys the distinction of not being
a politician. The selection seems
to displease New York.
The Daily Times was very late
yesterday, and the print was mis
erably bad. We beg to express
our regrets. It was with much
difficulty that we printed at all, ow
ing to the excessively cold weather,
stiff ink, etc., and all this accounts
for the illegible sheet sent out and
the delay in sending it.
The friends of labor in the legis
lature are receiving scant encour
agement from those whom they
would benefit. According to their
own statements and petitions, the
laborers do not want any legisla
tion. They are very well satisfied,
and being so, legislation in their
behalf is unnecessary, and there
fore without reason.

In compliance with an act of

considering the applications for
pensions provided for in said act
By order of
R. G. Howard,
Chairman.
We hope the attempt to have
published the substance of our col
onial records will not utterly fail.
We disagree with those who think
the book would not be read.
There is a demand now for a his
tory of South Carolina, and these
records are in fact a history of the
State from its settlement to the
Revolution. If a book of zoo
pages would not suit, then we do
not see why a book of a number of
pages sufficient to make it interest
ing aud readable cannot be pub
lished. We believe the legislature
should act, and act now. The book
would be appreciated anti read,
never fear.

—Florida was visited this morning
by tha coldest weather of the win

central portion of th*« State.
Vegetables as far south as Sanford
were badly hurt, but not entirely
ruined. The orange and other

not damaged to any considerable
degree. The fortunate feature of
the freeze was that it was of short
duration. The lowest temperature
