In considering Mr- rations

“As the Congressional districts
are at present arranged” says the
Columbia Register, “but one of
them contains a Conservative ma
jority, and it is represented by the
only gold bug South Carolina has
sent to Congress. If the State
were redistricted according to Mr.
Patton’s plan, there would be two
district’s in which the Conserva
tives would have majorities. I he
friends of silver are taking no risks
these days.”
Suppose a “friend of silver”
should be sent to Congress from
this second Conservative-district—
What then ? Would that relieve
the awfulness of sending a Con
servative ?
Southern ami Northern School Hiutorle*.
Kroui the UaUiaiore Hud.
One of our Nsw York contem
poraries takes violent exception to
a series of school histories recom
mended for use in the public
schools of the Southern States by
the Confederate Veterans’ Asso
ciation. It shows from extracts
from these histories that tlmy are
written in a spirit of partisanship
and sectionalism, treating the
Southerners and the Northerners
as distinct people and claiming
the justice of the Southern cause.
It is also alleged as, a grievous
wrong that the occupation of the
Southern States by the Northern
armies is termed "an invasion”
and that it is said that the North
ern armies were “ruthless.”
The effect of all partisan his
tories is bad. We can see it illus
trated in our school histories of
the wai of the revolution. The
spirit of animosity against Eng
land for the tyranny of George III
in pulling a tariff (ax on tea and
for the ferocious conduct of the
British soldiers during the war is
carefully cultivated in all our
public schools. In point of fact,
all our school histories of the
United States are largely occupied
by the revolutionary war, and this
portion of them is undoubtedly
one-sided and partisan. School
histories should, of all, bo the
most absolutely fair and true, and
if it can be done without the sac
rifice of truth, things calculated to
produce bad feeling should b«
omitted. Ideas and impression
received when wo aro young are
the ones which are most tenacious
ly held through life. It is, there
fore, important that these ideas
should be right ones.
But if our contehiporary should
examine into the Northern school
histories as carefully as he has
examined the Southern histories,
he might find there the reason
why the latter were written. No
one unfamiliar with the tu'qeot
would gather from the Northern
histories that the right of seces
sion was an ‘ open question until
th« was settled it. The Southern
people were fighting for a princi
ple. They now and have for a
quarter of a century admitted that
the question has been settled, and
