Editor Stackhouse, of the Ma rion Star, is spending the day In our city. We are glad to see Mr. E. C. Bass out again after a long and serious illness. The Swiss Bell Ringers gave their second and last entertain ment in the opera house last night. Mrs. J E. Edwards and chil dren, after spending a month with relatives in Columbia, have return ed home. Mr. John W. Moore is still quite sick with La Grippe. It is hoped that he will be out by the latter part of this week. Mr. L. W. Hodges, who was taken with La Grippe several days ago has somewhat improved, but has not as yet sufficiently re covered to be out. Mr. James Macfie who was severely burned several days ago by hot greese is still unable to do any work. He is able, however, to superintend. Mr. W. H. Miller, one of our efficient job printers, is stfll con fined to his bed with La Grfppe. We hope to have him with us by the latter part of the week. SeWfcil days ago the small child of Mose Brown, colored, fell into the fire and it was thought fatally burned. The child is im- proving and will probably recSVer. Messrs. Rollins & Cannon will open their furniture store this week in Sligh & Rucker’s old stand on Dargan street. A por tion of their stock has already arrived. Senator B. R. Tillman who ad dressed the people at Dillon last Monday, on the new county issue passed through Florence yesterday for Columbia where he expects to spead a few days before returning to Washington. We recommend that all tramps, that disturb the peace and quietude of the families of our citi zens be routed from the city. It has come to pass lately that it is unsafe for a man to leave his fami ly for any length of time during the night, even in a thickly settled community. Mr. J. W. Hatchell of the A. C. L. coach shops met with a painful accident yesterday. A piece of timber fell from the top of the coach on which he was working and inflicted two painful wounds, one on his head and one on the left side of his face. Mr. Hatch ell was fortunate in receiving no more serious wounds. Though somewha; disfigured, he is still at work. Lost.—On Coit street between Evans street and the residence of Mr. Jerome P. Ortlcers Elected—Speaker Gary Again—The Senate Commit tees — A Number of Bills Introduced. Promptly at 12 o’clock yester day the House of Representatives of South Caroliua was called to order by Clerk J. Waite’ 1 Gray. There were few absentees, and among those present many new faces were noticed. On motion Mr. 0. W. Garris, of Colleton, was made temporary chairman. The roll was called immediately and the members were sworn in b\ counties. Signing the roll fol lowed, and an inspection thereof showed a very small number ol absentees for the first day of th> semion. Without dallying the Hous> proceeded to elect a speaker. Mr. Frank B. Gary, of Abbeville, wa. nominated and elected, receiving 107 votes, the total number cast A committee duly appointed '•etired, and, returning, es corted him to the chair. After taking the oath he thanked the House for the honor conferred He said that he would know no party or faction; that he would be the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and with their co-operation he hoped that the business of the house would no' suffer. For Clerk Gen. J. Walter Gray Mr. Jesse T. Gantt and Mr. J. T Austin were nominated. The vot- resulted as follows: Gray 59, Ga'Ur 48, Ausfcui 4. Gen. iirmj ws* de clared elected and sworn in. For Sergeant-at-arms Mr. N H. Stansell and Mr. S G. Holley wen- nominated. The vote resulted a? follows: Stansell 87, Holley 25. Mr. Stansell was declared electee and sworn in. Mr. J. S. Withers was elected reading clerk without opposition. There were two nominations for Chaplain, Rev. J. C. Abtmy am! Rev. M. M. Kioard. Mr. Kinard received 53 votes and Mr. Abney 46. Mr. Kinard was declared elected. On motion the rules of the old house were adopted, and then be- fcau the drawing for seats by counties.
