The labors of Hercules are
nothing when compared to what
the Congressional ways and means
will have to pass through in ad
justing the tariff to suit all parties
interested.
The Georgia Legislature has
passed on anti trust law, be it said
to Georgia’s credit, it would be
wise for South Carolina to emu
late the example set by her sister
State.
Bicycle riding is growing in
popularity in our city. It is well.
There is no form of exercise more
exhilarating, invigorating and
wholesome, provided, of course,
moderation characterizes indul
gence therein.
This will be a busy week in
Congress. A number of important
bills are to come up, among which
may be mentioned Congressman
Loud’s bill to amend the postal
laws so as to probitit transmission
through the mails at the second-
class rate serial novel publications
and sample copies of news pa
pers.
The News and Courier speaks
wisely wheu it says : “The ‘special
court for special crimes’ should
find an early and a permanent
place in the judicial system of
South Carolina." Sankey Cun
ningham’s case in Georgia proves
the advantages of such a system.
He committed a brutal crime on
December 3, and, after being duly
tried and convicted by a specia
court, was hanged on January 1
all within a month. Had not jus
tice so swiftly overtaken him, in
all probability he would have been
lynched. Men, naturally and
justly enraged, were bent upon
taking bis life, but justice stepped
in and without delay performed
her duty well. Was not this much
better than lynching ? The brute
expiated his crime on the gallows,
and the hand of no man is stained
with his blood. Will not such
speedy bringing to justice do much
to check the commission of brutal
and peculiarly outrageous crimes ?
We think so, and therefore believe
with the News and Courier that
the “special court for special
crimes” should find an early and
a permanent place in the judicial
system of South Carolimf.
