Im mediately the wrock took fire, the water being only about three feet deep, and before suftioieut help could be secured, unfortun ate passengers and train men who were pinioned ender the debris were burned to death in sight of other unfortunates. Some of the passengers, not so badly hurt, managed to crawl oat and do all they could in assisting others, but with little avail. The bridge was a ponderous ( wood structure with an iron span • of 200 feet. In the center and just at the beginning of the iron 1 wuik Ira n wreckers had pulled the spikea and removed one of the rails. vVheu the engineer dis covered this, as was evident from the position of his throttle and reverse lever, he immediately at tempted to stop, but was running at such a rate of speed as to carry down the bridge. Every evidence showed that train wreckers had been at work. Aa Boon as news was received here both the Louisville and Nash ville and Southern railroads sent out relief trains loaded with phy sicians and others, and everything possible was done for those who had been fortunate enough to get out of reach of the flames, which consumed all of the coaches and a part of the bridge. Many of the killed were completely charred be yond recognition. The exact number who perished will never be known, but it is thought that it will reach 35. To cap the climax, one of tho relief trains which left here ran into the rear end of the working train which was stopped about 150 fdH from the bridge, and came rear knocking it in on top ol the bnrning train. In thia accident the following were injured: Sam Eastis, will die; William Raat, will die; Wood host ties If his e pleasure of nia ie board will come memo- ia kind and genial natare.
