There will be a good number of Knights from all over the county and some from other eounties present and an enjoyable day is anticipated. Mr. Armstrong J. Howard is to be the herald of the day. Messrs. Wm. F. Claussen, W. C. McCall and E- Cottingham will be the judges. The distance from first to last post 100 yards. Time al lowed to make this distance ten seconds. He is doing well and is very much pleased with his new field of labor. It is said there are a great many ducks on the pond at this season of the year. The corner store of Mr. John Kuker is nearing completion. Mr. W. M. Waters will move his large sto« k of furniture into this store about the 1st of January. Mrs. L. Y. Clarkson, and daugh ter, Miss Sadie, also Mr. D. S. Yates of Charlotte are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Jno. L. Barringer and other relatives in this city. Mr. P. D. Snowden, of Indian town, was in Florence yesterday on a prospecting tour. He has decided to locate here. We ex tend a heartv welcome to Mr. Snowden. Mr. James E. Sanders has come home to spend the holidays. Mr. Sanders is principal of the Bates- burg Graded School and hss made quite a success teaching. The Florence band has received a medley selection composed of some of the latest songs, among which are: “Just Tell Them that You Saw Me,” and ‘’Put Me off at Buffalo.” Regular services will be held in the Methodist church to-morrow. In the morning Rev. Thos. H. Law, D. D., of Spartanburg, agent of the American Bible Society, will preach. At night the Presby terian and Methodist congrega tions will have a union meeting in the same oharch and Dr. Law will speak about the work in which he is engaged. Mr. J. VV. The Weather Bureau Signals. Richmond, December 18.—The State of this evening prints letters from the Hon. Messrs. W. J. Bryan, R. P. Bland, W. J. Stone, George Fred Williams and John T. Morgan in reply to a query sent out from that paper as to what, in the view of those gentlemen, con stituted Democrrcy. Mr. Bryan’s letter reads as follows: Lincoln, Neb., November 27th, 1896. To the Editor of The State: I have not time to answer your questions at length. In a broad sense a democracy is a govern ment which the people rule and a democrat is one who believes in such a government- In a party party sense, Democracy is defined by the Chicago platform, and the person who supports the the party and its platform can call himself a Democrat. The platform was entirely satisfactory to me.
