Washington, Dec. 13.—Little else was discussed in Washington to-day among diplomats and poli ticians beyond the tragic death of the insurgent general, Maceo. The sentiment here among all classes is dec’dedly with the insurgents, *nd expressions *f sympathy were heard on all sides for the ultimate success of the Cuban cause. The subject of Maceo’s death will be brought up in Congress to-morrow, most probably in the Senate, where several resolutions recogniz ing Cuban belligerency are pend ing. It ia less difficult to bring to the subject np there than in the House, where the rules restrict ac tion. Chairman Hitt, of the House foreign affair committee, was not in a position to-night, he jaid, to discuss the subject of Maceo’s death. The news was too conflicting and indefinite, and he was in favor of waiting until the tails of the circumstances, as- Congress to call for and act upon his report. The matter will doubtless take this course. Mr. Hitt, because bis prominent position, is can tious, and he voices the genera sentiment of the conservative ele ment in both parties. There is in both branches of Congress a large number who are ready to recognize Caban belliger ency, whether the Maceo incident proves correct or not. Senator Blanchard, of Louisi ana, represented this element when he declared to-night that he was ready at any time to vote for a resolution recognizing either the belligerency of the Cubans, or bet ter still, their independence. Senator Platt, of Connecticut, said that the mendacious charac ter of the news from Cuba for the past six months and utter unreli- ableness, prevented him from ex pressing any opinion in advanceof official information confirming Maoso’s death. “Nobody knows,” he declared with emphasis, “whether Maceo is dead or alive; if dead, how he met his death or any of the estential details upon which to base an intelligent opin ion, and until I do know I will not speak as to what ought to be done, or indicate bow I will act.” Senator Thurston, of Nebraska, said he would vote to enter the protest of this Government against the manner of warfare being car ried on in Cuba, and Mr. McMil lan, of Tennessee, and Mr. Berry, of Kentucky, favored some action by the Government whhh would show to the world that the United States did not stand idly by anJ by its silence approve of the meth ods of the Spanish Government against Cuba. It is not believed thatja resolu tion to investigate the manner in which Maceo met his death will be offered in Congress, even Cuban sympathizers do not think such a matter is within the power of this (Government, as Maceo was a Span ish subject, and his death occurred on Spanish soil, but it will be within the province of the United States consul general at Havana to institute such inquiries And for Hj^- Our establish ment ablaze with a full line of BRIDAL and DAY PRESENTS.
