Florence Daily Times. Published Every Afternoon Ex- ctcpt Sunday. MRM Proprietors. ■™i> K B THE BEADING, THE LATENT phase or Civil. KErORM." The Atlanta Conatitution has this to say about the removal of Judge W. B. Fleming of Ken tucky for advocating the election of Bryan. ••While all this is true, it is also true that both of our contempor aries have missed the real essence of the matter. It is this: That while subordinate officials have been applauded, leaves of absence granted them and their expenses paid to oppose the election of Bryan, officials of the same rank and grade have been summarily removed for exercising the right of free speech in favoring the elec tion of the democratic candidate. Even allowing that there are class and caste distinctions among officials, and that heads of de partments have political rights which their subordinates have been compelled surre: de must be conceded that one set of officials should have no such privi lege from officials of the same rank and grade. Yet the fact re mains that officials who were ac tive democrats have bean removed and those who were active for the republicans have been retain ed. But Mr. Cleveland will care nothing for the criticisms of his mugwump supporters. He has accumulated riches, and th^se possibly, will give him content ment.’' This criticism fails to cover the case. It comes as a startling fact —that in this day of civil service reform, a President of this Repub lic should lend himself to such an act, and, particularly, in this case, the removal was of a democrat by a democratic President for iu porting one who had right to name of democrat- The question, of party, however, has no place here. The perma nence of our republican institu tions rests upon the freedom of the ballot and it is this great prin ciple that is involved. What can we aay of the co-er- oion of employees by the great corporations, when the head of the government, borrowing some re publican precedent, (that would be repudiated now) lends itself to such tyrannies. It is hard to be lieve of President Cleveland. “sleepy Hollow” and is ignorance, but thank God that in our own Southland there are yet seme who believe in disinterested patriot isms and absolute virtue. We wonder what the old typi cal democrat Thomas Jefferson— behind the times too we suppose —would think of such things. He resolved while in public life jever to engage while in public office in any kind of enterprise for the im provement of his fortune nor to bear any other character than that of a plain farmer. Yet Thomas Jefferson had all the learning ant culture which home and foreign schools could give a great and in quiring mind. James Monroe after leaving the President’s chair accepted the humble post of Justice of the Peace. He had no fortune. We suppose that these great men while in office wera_very foolishly looking after the interests of the people and not their own. They were called statesmen then, they are politicians'now. We will be treated anon with Mr.* McKinley’s' view' of public office CiUtioD Notice. STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, Cocntt OF FLOaaHCS. By J. P. McNeill, Esquire, Probate Judge. Whereas, Mattie E. McNeill, Judge Probate. m Now is the Time TO PUT OUT Onion Sets FOR Spring Onions. Still referring to the above quo tation from the Atlanta Constitu tion, iu its last paragraph, it baa been asserted for some time from many sources that Mr. Cleveland has become a millionaire. Some •ay, a multi-millionaire. Now it is not good sense nor is it the manifestation of a proper spirit to decry a man on ftocount of Lis riches. Rich men Mktule are very capable and some times good and it is no re proach to acquire wealth in a nor mal way. * But when men suddenly lean into fortune, the world is too wise not to know that it came by ■peculation. If Mr. Cleveland has acquired great wealth in thi* way, either by himself or through the manipulations of his millionaire friends, it is needless to ray that he ia bound by shackles stronger than bands of steel. I n p i am words, he will take care of him self and friends, however, the old republic may rock under political upheavals and revolutions. This greatly wise world may say this is sheer sentimentalism, the idea and duty of the President of * great people to care more for the people’s interests than his own.
