among some of the most influen
tial Kepublicans here that Mr
McKinley should in some way re
cognize the gold standard Demo
crats for their patriotic devotion
and timely aHsistance in the con
flict just closed- A well known
United States jurist, who takes a
keen interest in national politics,
while discussing the political situ
ation to-day said he hoped Mr.
McKinley would be brave enough
to give substantial recognition to
some of the gold standard Demo
crats to the extent of inviting one
of them to a seat in his Cabinet,
and sending some of the others
abroad as members of the foreign
altogether and they should be al
lowed to enjoy the results, ft is
too late for the minority to make
any s.-rioits protest. They had
that opportunity during tie cam
paign. and they made the most of
it. They are now expected to
abide with such complacency as is
theirs to command, this new e.\-
p riment in republican govern
ment.
Let us hope that it wili all turn
out for the best !"

willing to help re-enact a McKinley
tariff bill. This problem appeals
to the business men of both par
ties at this time with greater force
than the speculation over the dis
tribution of probable spoils.”
We have uo doubt that Mc
Kinley and Hanna and the like
would pay liberal patronage for
high tariff support and there lurks
in the article this suggestion, and
that, behind the main issue of gold
and silver on which the lines have
been drawn, forces are marshal
ing for another tariff contest—all
of which has bean kept most in
nocently masked during thtr cam
paign which has just ended.

The very suggestion of the ques
tion, “whether the g t!d standard
Democrats will be willing to help
re-euact a McKinley tariff bill,”
should be an affront to Southern
gold Democrats, at least- It is
true they have surrendered the
silver plank. It they surrender
on the tarilf, all the substance of
Democracy is gone. Nothing is
left but the name. The idea that
a great agricultural people—for
are not our grain, cotton, tobacco
and wool producing interests par
amount? should pay bounties to
tottering Northern mills, to North
ern industries ami monoplies of
every kind, to enrich the rich, to
make poorer the poor is simple
preposterous. We believe that
many who cast in their fortunes
with the gold party were sincere in
their convictions and cannot think
that any of them, save political i
