The Loudon newspapers are be
ginning to think the situation
more serious than they thought,
and while at first inclined to make
light of the message as a threat
only and as an election move on
the President’s part, they now see
that he has the support of the
United States, and are disappoint
ed and surprised at the result.
Chaaucey M. Depew comes in for
his share of their wrath also.
France has taken sides wiih En
gland on the question. The Cana
dian papers also condemn the
President and his message, and in
dulge in a general denouncing of
the Monroe Doctrine as an inter
national law. The stock markets
have felt the influence of the un
settled state of affairs, both in this
iuntry and Europe, the loss in
Kew^rk reaching 2£ per cent.
