SATURDAY EVENING DEC. 14 1895.
A NOBLE WORK-
The noble Red Cross organiza
tion has conseuted to go to the
relief of the Armenians in Turkey,
and will start as soon as there are
sufficient funds to carry them.
They will be followed with bless
ings, and received with blessings
at their journey’s end. The ordpr
has done much for humanity but
nothing more noble or deserving
of more praise than the work they
are going to do now. It requires
courage and self sacrifice in a
great degree, and it should receive
help and encouragement from the
entire country.
A bust of President Cleveland
is to be presented to Atlanta, by
several wealthy citizens of Geor
gia.
Yesterday, the thirteenth of
December, was the coldest day
known in New York for twenty-
three years,
IT—■■ L*1 1 "’ll 1 . 11 . 11 !”
The Southern railroads have
again reduced the price of tickets
to Atlanta, from the 19th to the
25th inclusive.
There is to be a meeting of the
Southern Interstate Immigration
and Industrial Association on the
17th inst., in Atlanta, to discuss
the industrial development of the
South.
December 21st will be negro day
at the exposition, and to induce
the more to attend there will be
special railroad rates, one cent a
mile or less. Employers have
been requested to give their ser
vants a holiday at that time.
Farrell & Edwards, the popular
photographers of Florence, are still
at their elegant rooms over Bult-
man’s store, where they have the
best light in this section of the
State and the best instruments
furnished by manufacturers. Give
them a call and “secure the shadow
ere the substance fades.”
THE RED CROSS
Has Accepted the Duty of Distri
buting to Armenians
Washington, Dec. 13.—The
American Red Cross Society has
decided to accept the duty of dis
tributing the relief funds for the
Armenian sufferers and has issued
the following statement:
“Owing to the unanimous and
urgent appeals from the friends of
humanity, representing nearly all
of the people of this country, the
American Red Cross Society has
decided that it must accept the
sacred trust of endeavoring to re
lieve the starving Armenians in
Asia Minor. According to con
servative estimates there are 350,-
000 utterly destitute people in
that country who will have to be
assisted six or eight months—un
til the next harvest.
“Fully realizing the difficulties
and dangers to be met, the Red
Cross will start for Turkey as soon
as sufficient funds are placed at its
disposal, or guaranteed, to insure
success.
“Funds may be sent to Miss
Clara Barton, president and treas
urer of the American Red Cross,
Washington, D. C.
“Authorized agents to receive
funds and materials will be pub
lished in a few days.
“The Red Cross also suggests
that goods, grain and other mate
rial may be sent by chartered
steamer
(Signed) “American National
Red Cross,
Clara Barton,
President.”
The society has had this plan of
relief under consideration for some
time, but was reluctant to assume
the dangers and responsibilities
involved. Miss Barton feels that
it will be the most extensive relief
work ever undertaken.
Letters and telegrams have
come from all directions urging
that the work be undertaken. Rev.
F. D. Green, the writer on the Turk
ish question, the head of mission
ary and relief bodies, editors of
heading Christian papers, as well
as public men and private individ
uals have asked that the Red
Cross assume the duties of distrib
uting the funds.
