Mr. Seymour MoCIeua^han is
on the streets again, but looks
badly.
Engineer Rufus Wysong brought
engine 108 into the round house
for repairs.
Miss Sarah Rose and Mrs. L. R.
Brazell left this morning for
Lamar to visit friends.
Train 208 had a wreck on the
Shortcut last night. The train
came uncoupled and came to
gether smashing up eleven box
cars.
W. J. Wilkins and C. P. Berrv
started with a team for Timraons-
ville this morning, but had con
siderable trouble in getting off, one
of the horses proving somewhat
balky. As usual the crowd knew
all about it. One said Whip him;
this was done. Another, Tie a
string around his ear: this was
done. Another, Put a string
around his leg, and this was also
tried. Then one suggested to build
a fire under him; another, get a
blade of fodder, and still another,
hold up his foot. After a few’ at*
tempts h>s foot was held up long
enough to get him started and
the gentlemen went on their way
rejoicing.
Fire Last Night-
Thos. Gregg lost his house and
all his furniture by fire last night.
About half past ten the alarm was
given and people rushed from
their houses to see where it was
located. Mr. Gregg, w’ho was
down town started in tho direction
of the flames but did not think it
was his house until he got near it.
The fire had made such headway
before anv one reached it that
nothing was saved, with the ex
ception of one high chair, which
was near the door. The probabili
ties are that the fire originated
from a spark snapping from the
fireplace. No one was in the
house at the time. There was in
surance amounting to $400 on the
furniture and $600 on the house,
but Mr. Gregg says his loss over
and above insurance wrill be about
$800.
THE CITY FATHERS.
They Meet, Cut Salaries and
Transact Other Business.
Mayor Day wrote a letter to the
Council suggesting that owing to
the financial condition of the city
it would be well to cut the salaries
of th* 3 * policemen 10 per cent and
that of the mayor 33$ per cent and
drop one policeman. Mr. Whitton
moved that they take the advice
the Mayor and cut the salaries but
leave the police force as it is as
they needed the four. It was car
ried.
Tailor Smith brought up his
case before the Council. Ho said
that in making the contract he
had agreed to guarantee the fit
and all his work, but did not guar
antee the cloth.
The Council after considering
the matter thoroughly agreed to
pay him the commercial value of
the suits, although they were not
satisfactory.
The mayor urged the necessity
of having the police uniformed
and equipped.
It w’as moved that they adver
tise for bids to make suits for the
police, it w’ns referred to tho po
lice committee with power to act.
Mr. Stackley moved lhat there
be $50 appropriated to set out
shade trees. Carried.
Mr. Odiorno moved that it be
referred to committe on building.
Carried.
Jell < >on wanted to know if. the
ordinance prohibiting gambling
would prohibit raffing if done by
individuals and also for church
purnoses during the Christmas
holidays. Mr. Odiorne stated that
as the ordinance read it would.
It w r as proposed that they sell
the old desk that the council had,
and was referred to the building
committee.
S. J. Williams, Dr. Jarrot and
T. W. Jefferson made statements
regarding the high assessments on
their property.
William’s and Jarrot’s matter
was referred to the grievance com-
mitte"'. The matter of Jefferson,
as regards his wife’s property, was
referred to a committee selected by
him, consisting of J. F. Stackley
and H. L. Odiorne.
Mr. Stackley moved that they
adjourned. Carried.
Before the Mayor.
Henry Thomson was arrested
for having a box of tobacco and
refusing to state where he got it.
The case was turned over to the
trial justice.
